Scan it yet, a FULL OBD2 scan? why not?if not.
now is the time...

the 1.8L J18 engine, same as the older Sidekick sports used.
same engine , know it I do.
its the precursor to the J20, (j18 is under-stroked, j20 with many of the same parts. inside)
the back fire means explosion sound to rear end of tail pipe?
yes, that is rich raw fuel in the muffler. plus Air.
if there are exhaust cracks and then engine goes rich this can happen( a double failure)
if how ever BACK means, back to the Air cleaner, then that be different reasons, (timing)

engine now starts.?>
engine runs.? has full power, car drives ok.?
JUST?
SURGE,. you never said.

does engine get hot? 180F or more and holds (y/n)
ever get a full tuneup this decade,
most dont so i tell you, bad spark causes, misfire and raw fuel is wasted to the exhaust and sure can go boom.

surging usually means the ISC can not control idle
so it hunts, (a suzuki software engine on all 90s engines)
PCM errors, inside it. (dangerous too)
a modern car, if idle goes too high the ecu commands the ISC closed
and holds it there solid, (safe way , no hunting allowed now)]
so if this car surges, it's , lean engine.

some think flooding is surging.
and this is usually below 800 rpm,
almost stalls, then corrects, seems like a surge.

next time post rpm range of surge.?????

do not drive a surging engine, do not be like Toyota drivers. (over 800 rpm hot)

surge from 400 -800 rpm is class 1 surge.
surge from 800 to say 2000 RPM is class2, and very dangerous to some folks, (key off, get car fixed, tow it)

The ECU controls idle speeds. (hard coded servo controls)

SOURCE: 91 Camry surging

You maybe need to adjust the idle speed, on top of the intake manifold, near where it says EFI, there a small black rubber plug, pull it out, turn off everything in the car, then turn the screw in where the plug was to change the idle speed. Or it could be that you need a new Idle Control Valve

My wife had a 93 ford tempo 4 cylinder with same problem. It turned out to be the idle air solenoid mounted on the air intake manifold.

I can not locate my fuses for my 2000 Suzuki esteem car?

A friend of mine had a Suzuki and we found his fuses behind the glove box (whole dang thing slides right out if you hold two "buttons" down on both sides). Maybe the same applies to you? Good luck and cheers...

Where location crank sensor suzuki esteem 2000

On the Esteem 1.6L: the Crankshaft Position Sensor is located on the right side (passenger side) of the engine Oil Pan.

For the Esteem 2.0L: the CKP is located behind the engine Flywheel in the back of the engine block. It is necessary to remove the transmission to service the sensor.

No start

the fuel pump is in the tank, and the spark plug wire's could be hidden under a plastic cover on that motor

2000 Suzuki Esteem (1.8) Fuel System

No SYMPTOMS stated, (sadly)
the J18 engines, twin cam, chain drive cam, nice motor.
an under stroked, J20. it is.. and share most parts.

alldata.com covers it.... and all cars... mostly.
for sure esteems (used books real off Ebay, if lucky, do a watch on ebay)?
and for sure Suzuki, the FSM is $4 to read. and posted 100 time here. (more ) this the real deal, (McCoy)
https://suzukipitstopplus.com/Products/1182-2000-esteem-service-manual.aspx

the filter, and pump , no need to replace pump unless
it has 12vdc to IT CRANKING< and filter is new. AND, pressure is out of spec. (see spec, below)
a gauge is $20 and way more easy to use than a bath in gasoline
for sure.and a $10 voltmeter from walfart.

now the Esteem secret (just in CASE)
"Remove rear seat cushion, rear right seat back, right side sill scuff, right front partition trim and right rear door opening trim."
bingo, a secret access port.

now the spec.
31-37 ?idle PSI
this is the fuel pressure at the rail, at idle.
cranking is 6 PSI more
driving up hill, wide open throttle, pressure rises to 3- 6psi more that idle. (near)
if pressure is low, check for 12vdc to pump, first.
then make sure the FPR works.
they can stick open closed or jam. and it must work right. or fueling will be ALL wrong. (cars this old FPR love to fail)
this engine ECU has program revision (flash) that causes
pump to not run key on, (read TSBs on same at suzuki...)

so, crank it and check pressure cranking if not starting?
or if it does start (you never said) then check at idle
and WOT. the PSI ( then gun throttle see pressure jump way higher) if all this pans out, forget pump, and FPR.

did you scan the PCM yet, that be like first..
all scan tools (real) work on 2000 cars.... all do.

2000 esteem vehicle just would not crank over, change plugs and still no response.

I find I have a similar problem with my Suzuki Esteem, that I'm trying to fix right now. I'm not an expert, but I believe it could be one of the following...

a) the contacts in the starter motor are worn out, therefore I'm not getting a surge in power that's needed to start the engine.

b) If I let my car sit overnight for twelve hours or so, it has a hard time turning over, the battery could be power-draining overnight (it might need to be replaced). I find it's starts easier when I unplug my accessories from the power adapter before I leave the vehicle.

c) The alternator is not charging the battery properly, which means the engine will have a hard time getting enough juice to turn over.

The first time this problem happened I recharged the battery for 20 minutes. I only ever had to do that once. Often it will start without jumping it if you just hold the key forward until the engine catches (takes about 5 seconds). I know that is a bandaid solution, pretty soon I'll have enough time to actually get find out what's going on.

I hope I may have been able to share some insight, let me know if you found any solution to it. I'll post my solution when I figure it out

Is valve adjustment a part of normal maitenance on Suzuki Esteem

When you hear some tapping, that's why you need -valve adjustments. At 137,000miles you probably need more than that to continue your trouble-free drives.
