That is a u-joint. Could be ring and pinion in rear end.

1994 Land Rover Discovery Manual has a grinding and clunking noise from rear, right side

A grinding noise suggests a bearing at fault or perhaps worn pads on the brake rotor.

However, the clunking noise you mention could also point to a problem with the drive shaft or differential.

The first thing you should do is to get under the vehicle and try twisting the propshaft back and forth. If there's any movement this points towards a worn universal joint on the propshaft. A worn universal joint can cause a clunking noise - particularly when pulling away. The vibration caused by a worn universal joint can also damage bearings in the differential and also to the splined ends of the axle shaft.

You're also going to have to remove the wheel from where the noise comes from and examine the end of the axle shaft/bearing.

Clunk noise when turning right

Could be the drive axle, but may also be a shifting lower control arm or strut. Usually a faulty drive axle clunks every time the axle turns.

CLUNKING NOISE COMING FROM REAR AXLE PASSANGER SIDE SEAL LEAKING GROOVE WORN IN AXLE COULD THAT CAUSE THE CLUNKING NOISE 01 FORD F-150

you have a seal leak causing the differential oil to get onto the rear brakes shoes.what is happening is the brakes grab the drum and shift until they can`t move(turn)any more causing the clunking noise.the groove in the axle if it is bad enough then it will need a axle sleeve installed which gives the axle were the groove is a smooth surface,it is a thin metal sleeve the diameter of the axle that is installed on the axle.

I replaced the right side front axle on my 2000 blazer and I still get a clunking noise when I switch into 4 wheel drive the noise only happens when I press on the gas so I believe it has something to do...

look for loose disconnected rear suspension components.also check for loose driveshaft bolts.inspect all nuts bolts to the specified torque.if everything check out okay.you have worn or damaged universal joint bearings.

A clunk noise comes from the rear underside of the differential.

have the drive shaft U-joints checked for excessive wear. if they are ok the differential carrier bearings are worn and allowing to much gear backlash.

Rear end clunk in Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup

The noise is caused by the axle button being worn out, this lets the axle move back and forth and clunk, this is a unique problem with C clip retained axles, it is a noise issue but will not fail and cause any more damage, in order to fix it you must have the axles pulled and the diff carrier checked for excess wear where the axle retainning C clip rides, if the carrier is ok then replace the axles.
