Sounds like maybe there is one tooth differential from the original timing position.

2000 ford focus zetec 16v 2.0L engine idle

NO VIn Told or country , 16 DOHC engine,+VVT
you forgot to scan the PCM ( USA car, OBD2 port)????????
lots of causes for near or for sure engine stalls
can you save the stall with fast right foot actions?? y/n
causes vast. it needs service,(means tests first)
  • EGR valve stuck open and bad.
  • ISC valve stuck or striking closed. clean it.
  • injector leaks. or clogs.(injector balance tests)
  • bad fuel
  • bad spark parts (plugs and boots)coil pack & HV wire sets.
  • never had a real tune up in 23 years, (bingo too common)
  • engine bad, (burned head poppet valves)
  • VVT failures in this DOHC engine.
  • cam timing belt ignored for over 100k miles and slipped.
  • there are tests to do and tools used to find each of these besides belts and spark parts service NOT DONE>

2006 kia sportage no start changed fuel pump, spark plugs, got spark, earlier in week was losing power made it home hasn't started since just cranksng

USA answers ONLY !!!
no engine told at all, and is an ENGINE failure, wow.
spark is test on all spark plugs not just one
and then make sure the cam belt did not snap or slip.
spark timing goes way off or dead. when belt slips. (Cam)

Second generation (JE/KM; 2004) ok not diesel but was opted, wiki tells about the 2 here. the first one has VVT that can fail. 2.0l is belt drive oops 2.7L
2.7L (G6BA) the 2.7 is odd cam but the belt must not slip ever .
but no VVT here to mess up.

The crankshaft drives intake camshafts by timing belt only; intake camshafts drive the exhaust camshafts thought small chain inside each cylinder head

to do DIY self work on any car, learn whats under the hood first.
or get lies and wild useless guessing, or me begging for engine name.

Volvo p0016 and P0017 after engine work. VVT not removed. Timed with cam locking tool.

Obviously, this is a tricky issue, so good you got the cam locking tool, but did you set the VVT when reinstalling timing belt, you have to set the pulley to full clockwise position before timing and aligning timing marks. I assume you did align to crank pulley, at least I hope so or your valves will be destroyed. Do you have dual VVT vehicle, or single VVT?

P0022 for 2004 toyota sienna van

P0022 Toyota - Camshaft Position \'A\' Timing Over-Retarded Bank 2

Possible causes

- Dirty Oil

- Faulty variable valve timing (VVT)

- Faulty oil control valve (OCV)

- Variable Valve Timing (VVT) harness is open or shorted

- Oil Control Valve (OCV) circuit is open or shorted

- Damaged Engine Control Module (ECM)

Tech notes

If the engine oil is clean and the VVT and OCV circuits are OK, replaced the VVT to resolve the problem.

When is the code detected?

After the ECM sends the target duty cycle signal to the OCV, the ECM monitors the OCV current to establish an actual duty cycle. The ECM determines the existence of a malfunction and sets the DTC when the actual duty cycle ratio varies from the target duty cycle ratio.

Possible symptoms

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

- Lack/Loss of power

- Engine rough idle

P0022 Toyota Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the Oil Control Valve (OCV) to regulate the intake camshaft angle. As a result of the angle change, the engine timing is advance or retard. Optimizing engine timing will help the engine improve torque and fuel economy, and the exhaust emissions decrease under overall driving conditions. The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system includes the Oil Control Valve (OCV) and VVT controller. The ECM detects the actual intake valve timing using signals from the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, and performs feedback control.

Cam sensor advances my timing at an idle on the nissan altima 2.5

The you need diagnostic time with a scanner to start
on the problem

Cam Sensors report cam movement to the pcm/ecu

Most VVT issues are from lack of oil changes & sludge
build up in cams & actuators

The engine light has come on and has something to do with the code 1388. i have since confirmed it is coding for variable cam timer. i want to know how much it will cost me to fix this and the implication...

VVT bank two cam over retarted.

This usually indicates a physical issue with the VVT unit or the timing belt/chain. Most VVT units default to zero so if there is some electrical failure the car will still run well enough to driver. But, since you are getting this code it seems to indicate a mechanical issue instead. An over retarded cam will pull in too much exhaust gas on the intake stroke and can cause a loss of power or a mis-fire since the mixture will be lean. If this code is caused by a jumped chain or stretched belt, it can lead to serious engine damage if those parts should fail.

How do I know when it's time to replace a timing belt on my 2003 Sorento? A local mechanic said it idles rough because the teeth are breaking off on the belt. How would he know that by just replacing spark...

It's unlikely that the cam belt would cause rough idle!!
normally you would change the cambelt after so many miles Mine are always changed after 30k miles regardless. The mechanic was purley guessing.

If the idle is rough then it will be an electronic fault like air flow meter,EGR valve, Idle control unit. etc

Get back to me if you need more info.

Rough idle when warm and in gear, idle pulses slightly every now and then, check engine light is on

It sounds like the timing belt is off a tooth. Did you have it scanned to see what code was in the computer? These engines will surge when the cam timing is off.

Idles up and down but runs fine only does in nutruel

Here are some of the causes of surges up and down at idle, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
