The sending units for whatever gage, sends signal to pcm, the pcm then sends serial data to instrument cluster, tells the instrument cluster what to do.
Can you check for instrument cluster trouble codes, if there are any? Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free. Sometimes they won't check for codes if the check engine lite isn't on, Just tell them it has been going on and off, they should check it.
Check voltage and ground for the instrument cluster. The ground wire for instrument cluster is black, the voltage circuits for instrument cluster are fuse protected.
bbbind.com
should have wiring diagram for instrument cluster. It will show the ground and fuses. There could be something wrong with your instrument or wiring circuit, somewhere. I can't properly diagnose this from where I am.

Turn the ignition OFF.
Disconnect the IPC.
Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
Connect a test lamp between the ignition 1 voltage circuit and a good ground.
Does the test lamp illuminate?

Perform Diagnostic System Check - Instrument Cluster , Diagnostic System Check - Driver Information Systems or Diagnostic System Check - Audible Warnings before using the Symptom Tables in order to verify that all of the following are true:
• There are no DTCs set.
• The control modules can communicate via the serial data link.
Review the system operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to the following:
• Instrument Cluster Description and Operation
• Indicator/Warning Message Description and Operation
• Driver Information Center (DIC) Description and Operation
• Audible Warnings Description and Operation
If you don't know about serial data communication an DTC'S I strongly suggest you take your vehicle to a Chevy dealer or an ASE certified repair shop .

hi,

sounds like the stepper motors in the dash are bad, you can have them replaced and they should work again. the other thing that it could be is the dash is going out and soon all the gauges will stop working

The gauge cluster quit working and is stuck. We disconnected the battery. And now the key wont come out. And cluster is still not working.

Battery needs to be connected with 12 Volts to have the ignition keys released from the switch. The stepper motors are know to go bad on the Trailblazers and will need to be replaced. The stepper motor it self is about $10.00 but to replace the whole cluster will be around $400-$500.

2004 Pontiac Aztek. The fuel gauge reads beyond full. Way beyond. In addition, it has a slight hesitation when taking off. It began hesitating first, then about two weeks later the gas gauge began reading...

The instrument cluster in these GM vehicles have stepper motors that control the gauges. It probably is the stepper motor for the fuel gauge going bad. This should have nothing to do with your hesitation, which could be anything from an O2 sensor to a good tune up.

My temp gauge and fuel quit working

This is pretty common on the 2005 Mustangs, it's caused by failing stepper motors in the instrument cluster, they control the movement of the gauges. Repair is around $180 and there's a guide on how to fix them yourself here - 2005 Mustang speedometer problem

Fuel gauge dont work i put a new fuel pump in it and it still do'nt work 1997 blazer

Was the wire harness replaced from the fuel sending unit to the frame, it's a good practice to replace the wire harness when the sending unit is replaced. The wires are know to break and cause sending unit issues from weak fuel pressure to faulty gas gauges.
The other possibility would be a faulty connection to the stepper motor in the gauge it self or just a faulty stepper motor that would need to be replaced. You can do a search on Ebay for stepper motors for your fuel gauge which runs for around $15.00 which is much better then $400.00 for a new cluster if it is and bad fuel gauge stepper motor.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.
