If the ignition switch on your 2007 Dodge Dakota is engaging and sometimes staying engaged until the engine starts, this could be a sign of a faulty ignition switch or a related component such as the starter or starter rela
if your saying your starter stays engaged after starting engine till you cycle thru the gears , your starter needs serviced , most likely a worn bendix pivot bushing
two options 4 repair
1= replace starter
2= remove starter and have it professionally rebuilt then reinstall it
this statement is hard to understand as it is not logical
the engine will start in any gear--ok --- problem in the neutral/park switch
when the engine starts the bendix does not go in starter but continues to whine --exactly what do you mean --does the starter motor stay engaged in the ring gear after the engine starts or does it come out of engagement with the ring gear but continue to spin
as there is no connection between the gear selection and the starter motor can you explain the last part of tour statement
check the condition of the ring gear as burrs from the starter pinion make the pinion stay engaged . While the starter is out to inspect the ring gear check or have the pinion overrun clutch checked for correct operation. Bench test the starter to check solenoid contact condition as it they are badly burnt there is a chance that contact is not being broken on releasing the key to the run position.
Try removing the starter and putting a small amount of grease on the bendix gear drive. That is the part you can see in the nose,with the gear. Not on the gear, grease the spiral shaft.
Your starter drive is staying engaged. Either the starter has failed, or your ignition switch is keeping the starter engaged. Try moving the key back from "start" while the noise is occurring. More than likely, the starter is the culprit.
