BMW defroster works on vacumm so if you have air blowing from the dash vents when the seclector is on A/C and when on bi-leval the air comes out of the dash vents and the floor vents then you have a vacumm leak most likely a vacumm hose is off, Or due to the age of the car the engine heat causes the hoses to crack and break. the BMW V-8 engine has a problem with the rubber holder for the PCV valves cracking and leaking that causes very low vacumm pressure also check all of the vacumm lines that go through the fire wall most likely your problem is just a disconnected or broken vacumm hose or the PCV valve holders.
If it's a heater core hose, it shouldn't be too hard to find where it should go. Remember, the hose is only so long, so it's got to be within that length of hose. Go slow with a flashlight and, holding the hose in one hand, kinda move it around it full length to see where it might have been.
Check to make sure you hear a mild thump when you switch from cold to hot. Turn the fan down so you can hear. If not, look for a small vacumm hose in the engine compartment by the heater hoses coming from the firewall. This feeds the switch that moves the heaterdoor. It works off of vacumm. If the door is working, you may need to bleed the coolant going into the engine. There should be a small square plug on top of the thermostat housing. This lets air out of the engine as you fill it with antfreeze. Take this out or the housing off and then make sure it is full.
Gm did make a kit to do away with the vacumm set up and make it all electric. very easy to install , short piece of wiring harness and a solenoid for front diff. May try replacing hoses but i dont think any of the vacumm type parts are availiable anymore. I did not think the 1992 year model was vacumm.
the problem is a vacumm leak , the control panel works with vacumm from engine supplied by small hoses and also have an vacumm tank under right front fender , check for disconnected hoses or break, the main vacumm hose is on engine intake manifold, ahh , also check control panel
on mine the hoses are visible, with the exception of one.. its sort of hidden, you have to remove the cover and look behind the bag.. but, even so, i still like my 2000 DirtDevil, runs good, looks great. enjoy your vacuum.
That sounds like what may be happening is the "Vacumm Motor" that locks and disconnects the front axle is binding and not engaging all the way. Or possibly the vacumm supply is not sufficient. Trace the vacumm hoses and look for oil contamination or other damage. You may want to hook up a vacumm guage and check the two hoses. One will have vacumm on 4WD engage and the other on 2WD. You should see the same amount both ways.
Make sure that the 4WD engage lite works too. That would be the electrical switch on the front axle. It should turn on a indicator lite on. (I believe all models are equipped with one with that system)
And before you're done you should inspect all the u-joints and drive axle Constant Velocity joints for wear or the presence of rust around the caps. If there is rust around the cap it is probably full of rust instead of grease (bad) It good to check those periodically but those shouldn't be creating you're noise intermittently.
Let me know how that works for you.
