Need to know if it has an interference motor.
The Ford ZX2 1998-2003 was a 2 door sports coup derived from the 3rd generation Escort. There was only one engine used in the ZX2, the ZETEC 2.0 L DOHC. As configured for the ZX2 this is a non-interference engine. There were no options for any other engine in the ZX2.
The ZX2 S/R, while producing more power, uses the same ZETEC non-interference engine but a different intake, exhaust, and PCM.
Ford escort/ focus engine 2.0 l spi sohc 1997-2004 has been identified as an intereference engine and that means very likely valve to piston damage
( auto data timing belt information )
note-- up to 2002 year Ford has not recommended a timing belt interval for changing
Ford has however recommended a replacement every 120.000 miles using the service history as a guide
however good professional trade practice recommends every 60.000 miles ( 100.00klms) and the replacement work should include replacement of the crank and cam shaft seals and idler pulleys involved ( the biggest destroyer of belts is oil)
recommended labor time is 2 hours
if the belt has broken then head removal and valve work will add up to 5 hours to that time
While all of your information on the 2.0L SPI SOHC is correct, that engine was never available in the ZX2. OP was specifically asking about the ZX2 motor which is a ZETEC 2.0L DOHC motor and as configured for the ZX2 it is a non-interference engine.
For those who don't understand the difference between an interference vs. non-interference engine, in simplest terms if you snap the timing belt on an interference engine you will do damage as the valves that are left open will come in contact with the pistons.
In a non interference engine if the belt snaps the valves will not hit the pistons unless you've also either broken a valve spring or stem which would allow a valve to protrude into the combustion chamber further that it was designed to go.
