Smalls like gas when heat is on - 2002 Chrysler Town & Country

This sounds like a fuel pump issue. You can check fuel pressure to find out if this is your problem.

You might want to look closely at the injectors. Sometimes with heat and age, the small o-ring on the injectors go bad and small amounts of the vapors can escape. Also, there is an evaporation canister on or around your fuel tank, When its warm the canister emits gas vapors as well. Then there is the EVAP hose. I would only worry about the Evap hose if you smell it more so after you fill up.

The electric fuel pump in this car is located inside the fuel tank, it is a very small pump but able to do its job without burning out because it is cooled by the gas it is immersed in, when you run out of gas you severely overheated the pump and it seizes up the rotor that pumps the gas. You should avoid ever letting the fuel tank level go below 1/8 tank on gauge to avoid pump damage from heat. Bottom line you will need to replace the fuel pump. I have seen this happen dozens of times in cars towed to the shop after they ran out of fuel..

besides draining the whole fuel tank -- the next best thing to do is to drain out the fuel filter completely and re-install,AND then go to your local auto parts store and buy some stuff call 'HEAT' ( this is a gas additive that removes water that may be in the tank ) and add this to the tank,, don't worry about the the correct amount to add ( fuel to heat ratio ) -- just pour the whole little bottle into the tank. now while you are at the parts store -- also pick up a 'octane booster' ( like 'Octane101' or something similar ) and add this to your tank along with the 'Heat'. between the two this will help curve the bad fuel. now since bad fuel does not burn very clean it is also a good idea to remove,check and clean your spark plugs,, if they look kinda on the so-so side, replace them with new ones,, this will ensure that you have good spark ( which is very important !! ).
now this has happened to me twice and to a few of my friends -- AND I would call the gas station that you got the fuel from and tell them that you got bad gas there,, I have actually got one of them to pay for the fuel clean out chemicals that I had to buy to fix the problem.
IF you want it done 100% correctly,, you can drain the fuel tank completely and start with new fuel,, but if you have a FULL tank - this could be kinda a big pain.. the best way to drain the tank would be to disconnect the fuel pump DELIVERY side line and just let the fuel pump pump the fuel from the tank into small gas cans,( you will need to buy a small hose to attach to the fuel pump to feed into the small gas tanks ),,, and then start with new fuel,, remember to drain out the fuel filter and check and clean the spark plugs.

it is generally because the air con heat exchanger has to be cooled in order for your air con to work correctly and cool the interior of your car.


The air conditioning utilises a gas by the name of freon. This gas is pumped around the air con system by a compressor. The gas, going through the aircon cooler or heat exchanger, starts to cool down. Depending on the system layout, the gas is forced through a very small aperture situated after the cooler. It reverts to a liquid, passes through the matrix in the car, a fan blows the interior air of the car through the matrix. The fluid picks up the heat, and cooler air exits the matrix and, (hopefully) cools the interior of the car. This endless cycle is repeated as long as the air con is powered on.

i would look at the l/h side of air box assembly in the car. right abobe the gas pedal in the center of vehicle (center comsole) you will see a black box (good size). there is a small (white ) gear that falls out from the air mix door and causes no heat issues, because the door cant move. look there first. if the small white gear fell off, it will be pretty noticablem because it will be cocked sideways. that is the air mix door gear, that changes position of doors and allows hot/cold air to come in. How id your heat knob on the dash moving?? is it free, or does it bind up, while you are turning it from cold to hot and back to cold?? check it.

there is a small gas leak under the hood which is being picked up by the vent system. have a mechanic take a close look at it. there is usually some clue.

Check for exhaust leaks.

Check for fuel leakage.

your heater core may not be working as it could be clogged,located close to the gas pedal hidden behind a small plastic cover

when you run out of gas it really overheats the fuel pump, it is very small and compact, and it needs the gas around it to cool the heat of operation, I will bet you have burned it out, check the fuel pressure while cranking.
