Indoor lights that dim and then go off after you leave car are staying on

have you set the light switch to the courtesy light position , with the ignition on turn light switch so light is on then turn switch so light is off ,open door if light comes on that is the courtesy position if does not close door turn switch to the last position then open door light should be on close door light off,TURN IGN OFF EXIT AN LOCK VEHICLE INTERIOR LIGHTS WILL STAY ON FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN SLOWLY DIM .watch them before leaving

could be several things, I would check battery terminal connections make sure they are tight and clean. how old is battery? could need replaced. if jump starting works I would suspect battery, once running is alternator charging? turn head lights on before trying to start, are they bright? leave them on and watch them while someone trys to start car, do they dim or stay bright? if the dim quckly with click that your hearing you may need a starter, if they stay bright, most likey a battery or bad terminal connections.

i have the same problem on my 96 mustang. i even went bought new head lights and nothing

When you say "turn key dash lights go out and all is dead", do the lights come back on when you turn the key back to "off"?
With key off, try turning on your headlights- are they bright?
Flip to high beams-do they get brighter?
**If lights get dim while trying this, it's the battery-(dead/needs charged or replaced-which may have been caused by a bad alternator).
Leave lights on, now turn your ignition switch to "on"-do the lights get dim or go out?
Try and start the car-anything change?
If the lights were fine until you tried to start the car, more than likely your battery terminals need cleaning/tightening.
The lights should at least get dim when you try and start the car but only while the starter turns over: when the engine is running your lights (as well as all your other electrics) are powered by the alternator.
If you do all this and lights are okay all through this procedure, your problem is probably in your starter circuit. (Starter relay, ignition/key switch)

Is the interior light switch turned off? If it is, try pushing the button switch inside each door, on the door frame to see if one of them has a problem.

Try a hot battery first then get your starter checked.

You have daytime runing lights. When you turn the signal off does it just stay on or does it flash? If it just stays on and you have some light dimming problems, it is more than likely a bad ground on the front signal sockets. This can be repaired by cleaning or replacing the sockets.
