Brake/Shift Interlock System The shift interlock system prevents the shifting from PARK (P) (when the ignition switch is in the RUN position) unless the brake pedal (2455) is depressed. The interlock system consists of an electrical solenoid mounted at the base of the steering column (3C529). If the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the solenoid has continuous power supplied unless the brake pedal is depressed.

Removal

  1. Remove steering column as outlined in Section 11-04A or Section 11-04B .
  1. Unclip wire terminal from solenoid.
  1. Remove insert plate and solenoid by removing three retaining screws.
  1. Pry off clip.

Installation
  1. NOTE: The clip which retains the solenoid to the insert plate should not be replaced for service. The clip's sole purpose is an assembly aid for the assembly plant. Position insert plate/solenoid assembly to the steering column and tighten the retaining screws.
  1. Install the steering column in the vehicle as described in Section 11-04A or Section 11-04B .

The gear shift in my envoy 2002 is locked on d...what will i do?

Your vehicle has a shift interlock feature. When you press on the brake pedal a solenoid pulls a locking pin out of the way so you can shift out of park. First, check the fuse for the shift interlock solenoid. If that's good, either the brake pedal switch or the solenoid is bad. In the meantime, pull out your owner's manual and read up on how to bypass the interlock. There's a manual way to do it to get you started until you can get it fixed.

The "shift lock button" will not depress when i press the brake in to start. Upn using the over ride option i can shift and also have brake lights. Is this do to the "Shift Lock Control- ECU,SELENOID or...

Hello. The shift release solenoid is controlled by the brake light switch; it has 2 functions...one is to illuminat ethe beake lamps, the other is to provide electricity to the shift interlock.

The first thing I would do is to check to see if you have 12 volts DC at the wire on the shift interlock solenoid, when the brake is depressed. If the voltage is present, then ensure that there is a proper ground. While you are there, inspect the interlock solenoid for contamination. Soda, coffee, etc when spilt onto the console can find its way into the solenoid, and seize it up, thusly preventing its proper operation, The failure rate for the shift solenoids is VERY low; I would seriously doubt that the the solenoid has failed. You either have a power issue (replace the brake lamp switch); or clean the solenoid, use WD-40; it works great. Please get back to us if you need futher assistance.
