You need to know how it works before you can diagnose it. There is a starter relay in the under hood fuse/relay box .. This relay is controlled by the PCM - engine computer . Does you car have a anti-theft system ? a red light on top of the dash or a SECURITY light on instrument cluster ? Is the red light flashing fast when trying to start the car . If you find an pull the relay out an look on the bottom you will or should see four numbers . 30 & 87 , 85 & 86. You can test from the socket where the relay plugs in . PIN'S 87 & 85 should have B+ voltage . PIN 30 takes voltage from PIN 87 to start the vehicle , PIN 86 is the control from the engine computer . The PCM gives a ground on this circuit to energize the relay closing the contacts inside ,completing the circuit between B+ voltage on PIN 87 to PIN 30 to start the car.

Do 2002 ford Taurus 24 valve v-6 have a starter relay mounted on the firewall?

I don't think so. The starter has a solonoid on it. There isn't a relay involved. Check for power at the small wire on the starter when the key is in the "start" position. If there is power there ,the starter is bad. If not, could be neutral safety switch or ignition switch.

1995 Taurus. Starter will not disengage. Engine cranks, but will not turn over.

Find the starter relay under the hood. It may be bad and stuck so power continues going to the starter. Try a new relay Or try pulling off the small signal wire on the relay (it is from the switch), and hook battery up. If starter continues to run, the relay is bad. If starter is stopped, put the signal wire back on relay. If starter now starts operating, and key is still off, then switch may be bad .Location of relay may be at left front fender apron, in front of shock tower (like on earlier taurus models).

2001 ford taurus, last time i crunk it up the starter stayed engaged even when i turned the car back off, i had to disconnect the battery, i replaced the starter but now it still wont crank and it blowes...

Hello, Take the small wire off the Starter relay and then use a testlight or Voltmeter to test the small wire by attaching one end of your gauge to a ground and the other to the small wire from the relay. It should have no power until you turn the keyswitch to start. If it does have power at other times that is part of the problem.

You have an Interlock switch on the Brake pedal lever under the dash. A lot of times a foot can hit this switch and break it and wires inside can jump and fuse together. Your ignition switch also has adjustments on the column on some models, so when you replace the switch; the rod or cable the switch connects to has to be the correct length. You determine this length by trial and error so that when the Keyswitch is in the START position, the small wire will have power.

With the constant cranking of the starter, I would replace the starter solenoid before attaching the small wire to it. Now that you are positive the small wire is working only in the START position when you attach the small wire the starter should not crank until you want it to.

I hope my solution is very helpful in fixing your Taurus.

My son has had three starters replaced in the last year in his 2004 Ford Taurus. I would not think that is the problem. His car will not start today. Could it be he needs another starter, numbe four, or...

you need to test the ignition wire on the solenoid the small one when you turn the key to start the car if the test light lights and the starter does not kick in yes its # 4 while holding the key in start position bang on the starter with a hammer it might start its a common problem with fords bad starter rebuilds and a lot of heat under the car but if you have no test light lit while turning the key then you have another problem like ignition switch or nuetral safety switch hope this helps

How to install starter on 2004 Ford Taurus

The starter is located in front of the motor between the radiator and the oil pan. There is two bolts that reqires a thirteen wrench or socket to remove it. Disconnect the battery first before you start. The bottom bolt is usually a stud that hols the ground wire from the battery. Remove the nut from the stud, than the ground wire, than the stud. Than remove the top bolt. Remove the two wires from the starter and you have it

2003 ford taurus how does you car sound when you try to start if your solenoid is bad just had starter replaced 1 year ago I don't know if it was a new starter or not but now car won't start battery is...

If you have a test light, you should check the small "tickler" wires on the starter relay. You do not know if the start signal is getting from the keyswitch to the solenoid. With the small wire detached you should be able to use a test light or 12volt meter on this wire. When you turn the keyswitch to start, the tickler wire should have power. If it does not, the ignition switch is probably bad.

If the tickler does have power, then clean the mounting surface of the solenoid and reconnect the wire and see if it works. If the car cranks you were losing the ground. If the car still does not crank put the test light on the cable going to the starter and ground the test light or gauge.

You will know there is power to the starter if the test light or gauge shows power from this connection. This means the solenoid is good and either the starter itself is shorted or has lost its grounding. Check all connections by the starter and try again.
If no luck the starter is bad.

Car won't start. Bought privately 2 days ago, started fine, now will not start. Starter replaced in Feb '08, but less than 500 miles put on car since then. Checked battery and it is fully charged. No sound...

check for constant battery power on the main lug of the starter constantly. and check the small wire for battery power while trying to start if you are missing the small wire power could be your starter relay or ignition switch, you can also try jumping the two posts on the starter with the key on if it starts you are missing the starter signal decribed above (small wire) please rate -jeff
