You may be listening to a slightly noisy differential or the Tyre's....If they are off roader's they sometimes buzz....To check the diff keep it in gear and give normal gas when descending a hill and then, with the vehicle in gear lift your foot from the gas pedal....If the noise increases to any notable degree, its the diff....You can carry out the same test by disconnecting each of the shafts in turn and repeat the test....When testing the front diff, don't forget to engage the 4X4 drive or you wont go anywhere....You've said the sound is not high in volume, I'd think you can leave it...As an after thought have you checked the oil in the transfer case? Its not the same as the gear box and has a separate filler?.

SOURCE: The car is in neutral

The first thing to check is your brake lights. See if they are working. If they are not working, then your brakelight circuit needs to be repaired so the shift interlock system can work. This could be due to a bad brake lamp switch. If your brake lamps are working, then you probably have a bad shift interlock solenoid in the steering column if you have a column shift or in the shifter housing if you have a floor shift.

sounds like a broken shift cable. (the connection between the shifter and the gearbox) common symptoms are the shifter move easier than normal.and does not move to any gears (not even park or neutral).

My 86 toy 4x4 if u put it in 5th gear and hold it in it will stay but if u dont it pops in neutral ive been told its ashifter seat bushing. is that true?

Pull the shifter out and look, as there is a plastic "ball" at the end that may be worn out. Take off the shift boot inside the cab, and notice a collar around the shifter, push it down and turn counter clockwise to release it.

2000 Dodge Durango will not shift out of 2nd gear

It seems to be stuck in 4x4 still. There could be damaged done to the powertrain by the towing company. Therefore they should be held accountable for the damage and repair that will be needed. You never tow a vehicle in 4x4 it should be carried on a flat-back. Same with AWD vehicles. The towing companies are well aware of this, is their business to know. Make sure to disengage the 4x4, put the 4x4 shifter on the floor in neutral while in park or not moving. If you continue to have problems contact the towing company and hold them accountable for it. See what you can work out with them. If they tell you they are not responsible then contact a lawyer and make them responsible for it.

Pulling the 4x4 shifter

put it neutral then move the lever; if still stuck, roll the vehicle front or back and continue to try till the gear splines mesh; good luck. ps. if electronic and that doesn't work, the ck the fuses.

Hello, 1986 Toyota 4X4 Truck 22R carb engine manual transmission. My son was driving it and the rear wheels locked up. Driving in 2 High mode. He got the truck pulled over to the side of the road using 4X4...

I've seen a similar issue on other transmissions where the shifter slips out of the slots in the shift forks, either due to shifter bushing wear or just general wear on tte trans. It can usually be remedied at least temporarily by popping the shifter top off the trans and resetting the forks all back to nuetral and then reinserting the shifter. It gets jammed when two forks are trying to engage two different gear sets.
On one of the 4x4 sites, they tell you how to replace the shifter bushings, cheap fix if you are lucky.
Good luck.
