hi, gm vech. are elec.complex with logic that is all there own. im a retired ford tech, and gm would drive me crazy sometimes. now some ideas, your dash light are controlled with an ecm, keep in mind, your dashlights and tail lights are on the same circut. i would check your batt. cables, if your ground cable has a high resistance it could cause issues. in fords they had bad dimmer switches that would cause the same issue. if you have someone with an obd2scanner it might have a code.hope that helps.
You may have a melted fusable link at the starter motor. Something would have caused this link to melt. Have a look at the wiring on the starter to see if one is melted or come apart and repair as necessary
The reason all of the dash light came on is that the engine died. If it died abruptly with no warning I would check and make sure the timing belt is intact.
charge the battery and once fully charged, do a LOAD test on it, clean all the connections and start the car ,, check the voltage at the battery posts with the car running, you should get between 13.5 and 14.5 volts, if not, replace the alternator , if you do, the battery and the cables just needed some attention
dirty cables connections in the power distribution box or dirty battery terminals as well but this is a slightly different but?? main cause a corrosded connection in the power supply box
Well 145K is alot of miles, catera's are not that reliable especially after 100K. It sounds like you could have multiple issues but take it to a mechanic asap before it becomes unfixable.
Its the crank sensor. There was a recall a few years back for 2001 8.1 liter engines crank sensor. Engine would shut off perodically and sometimes would not restart untill cool. Plus it just happened to mine. about a 350 dollar dealer fix.
It sounds like your car has an intermittent open current feed problem. Has there been any electrical/component repair or replacement recently? If so, that would be a starting point for diagnosis. Sounds like an ignition switch type problem. If you had an intermittent battery connection, the car would continue to run from the alternator output, but would not cause the warning lights to go through their initial "bulb check" sequence. But if "on" voltage is lost at the ignition switch, or that circuit, it would.
