1999Buick regal gs. Car shut off like it wasnt getting fuel changed filter got me home ran fine then cranks stuts back off like no fuel again blak flood smoke coming out exhaust

Use a fuel pressure gage, check for proper fuel pressure, key on engine off. Then with key off, see if pressure will hold for a bit? If the pressure drops like a rock, check for a fuel pressure leak, check for fuel injector leak and fuel pressure regulator leak. If fuel pressure regulator is connected to fuel rail and has a vacuum line, check to see if gas in the vacuum line, if so, pressure regulator is faulty.

Check for applicable trouble codes? How long since a tune-up?

My 2002 gmc envoy 4.2 liter 6 cyl is not running properly. It seems as though it may be due to fuel pressure problems

Have you ever changed the fuel filter ? Do you smell gas ? Check the vacuum hose at the fuel pressure regulator for fuel ! Check fuel pressure with fuel pressure gauge ! This is probably to much info but hook up a scan tool an check fuel trims ! Is the check engine light on ? Secret of Engine Problem Diagnosis Fuel Trims Pt 1

Loosing fuel pressure every ten to twelve seconds

are you using a gauge? is this the 1.0L engine 3cylinders.
Trottle body injection (TBI) >
running or not?
the correct way to do this is measure at the fuel filter test port

ill quote the FSM
  1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the fuel inlet line at the fuel filter and install a suitable pressure gauge on the line.
  3. Connect a jumper wire between the terminals of the fuel pump relay connector and check the system pressure on the gauge.
  4. Fuel pressure should be 25-33 lbs.
  5. As the pressure reaches 33 lbs., the relief valve in the pump should pulsate the pressure so it is always within specification.
  6. If the pressure is above specification, check for restrictions in the fuel lines. If no restrictions are found, replace the fuel pump. If the pressure is below specifications, check for battery voltage to the fuel pump and correct as required. If battery voltage is found, replace the fuel pump or fuel pump relay.
  7. Before removing the pressure gauge, relieve the fuel pressure again.
  8. Reconnect the fuel line. Start the engine and check for leaks.
end quote.

How to check fuel pressure

With a fuel pressure gauge. If there is a test port called a schraeder valve on the fuel rail on top of the engine, it's easy. If no test port, you have to tee off the fuel line somewhere convenient (like right after the fuel filter) and hook your gauge up there. Hook the gauge up, make sure of no leaking, turn key to on, and read the pressure (it will read the same pressure in the line as at the fuel rail). Check pressure with key on, and then with engine running- if at the specs for your vehicle, it's good. If pressure is below specs, pinch off or pull off the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator, and see if pressure raises. If it does, try another pressure regulator. If no change, check the fuel return line for restrictions, check or replace the fuel filter, or suspect a poor performing fuel pump. On MPFI systems the pressure should be about 50 psi, but find the specs for your vehicle.

Wont idle or start without priming tbi

first check fuel pressure with a mechanical fuel gauge that attaches to fuel line schrader valve. around T.B.I. if no pressure with key on check fuel pump relay for correct operation, and also the oil pressure switch has the fuel circuit to it so possible oil pressure switch also. fuel pump has a check valve to keep fuel from going back to tank, so when u turn key on fuel pressure should go up within 1-2 seconds on gauge. if fuel pressure goes down quickly, possible bad fuel check valve, change fuel pump and fuel pump check valve (located right above fuel pump inside tank)

Car wont start. Has spark, tried Carb Cleaner.

You may be weak on fuel pressure . even a couple of lbs low on a cold start will cause a no start.
Double check cold start cranking fuel pressure. If under 63-62 lbs you have problems.
one test is to give it a squirt of carb cleaner not starting fluid. If it starts then you have a fuel pressure problem.
Run the full fuel pressure test and post back pressures.
Here is the guide lines on testing.
Hard to start cold.
Check cold start fuel pressure.
Check engine running fuel pressure.
Check engine running on the road fuel pressure.
Then shut it off and watch for fast leak down.
Pinch off at rubber part or block off return line and check full pressure.
Later V6 and V8 gm engines should have 60-66 fuel pressure.
Cold start should be 64-65 lbs of pressure.
If you do not have full fuel pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel.
Do not leave home without it.
Engine running should be 60-66 lbs pressure depending on engine load.
Full pressure with return pinched off should be 75-85 or more.
And if it has a fast leak down after shut off you have a leak.

The 75-85 is only a check on the capable full pressure of fuel pump.
If you can not find the rubber return line check full pressure by plugging return line or just or the true full pressure can be taken direct at the end fuel filter.
What are the pressure readings that you have done.
What are your cold start pressure readings?
Post back what you have. Good Luck

On cold mornings, will not start and just "turn over" replace fuel pump and complete tune up ..still the same problem

I suspect fuel pump problem how do I check fuel pressure, what tools do I need

There should be a Schrader valve on the fuel rail (looks like a valve stem on a tire, it is metal).

You need to connect a fuel pressure gauge to that valve and do the following test:

  1. Relieve fuel pressure.
  2. Remove the 12 mm sealing nut from the fuel rail. Attach the fuel pressure adapter nut, 12 mm (90201 - P0A - 003) and the special tool.
  3. Start the engine. Measure the fuel pressure with the engine idling and the vacuum hose of the fuel pressure regulator disconnected from the fuel pressure regulator and pinched. If the engine will not start, turn the ignition switch on, wait for two seconds, turn it off, then back on again and read the fuel pressure. Pressure should be: 260 - 310 kPa (2.7 - 3.2 kgf/sq.cm, 38 - 48 psi)
  4. Reconnect vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator. Pressure should be: 210 - 250 kPa (2.1 - 2.8 kgf/sq.cm, 30 - 37 psi) If the fuel pressure is not as specified, first check the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is OK, check the following:
    • If the fuel pressure is higher than specified, inspect for:
    • Pinched or clogged fuel return hose or line.
    • Faulty fuel pressure regulator.
    • If the fuel pressure is lower than specified, inspect for:
    • Clogged fuel filter.
    • Faulty fuel pressure regulator.
    • Fuel line leakage.
