BOTH types of ignition coils were used on 1988 Cutlass Ciera. Type 1 is a single unit with 3 coils built into it. If one coil goes bad, you must replace the entire unit. Type 2 incorporates 3 separate coils mounted on the control module. These coils can be replaced individually. (See picture below) You simply have to LOOK at your ignition coils to see which type your Cutlass is equipped with. Please note that these systems are NOT interchangeable.
Most of the time this has to do with the anti theft security system. You may not even know that you have it, but it all stems from that little black "chip"in your key. That chip sends a signal thru the ignition, and then to the TDM computer. If any of these parts or wiring fail, your car will fail to start. The expensive part is trying to figure out which part is failing. I've had the best luck with just bypassing the entire system forever and never having to worry about this again. The TDM in the security system (VATS/PassKey) is having problems, it's typical on those cars. You can find a great write-up here: http://newrockies.ca , it was the only thing that saved my Park Avenue.
The mechanic should check on the ignition system first . Check the ignition switch, the ignition coil , the spark plug , the spark plug cable , the distributor assembly and the wires and the fuses.Check if there are worn out or destroyed then replace it. And then set the distributor timing mark and the firing order of the spark plug which is 1,3,4,2.These 1,3,4,2 are the number of the spark plug connecting to the distributor assembly. Then try to start the engine .The cause of the engine back fire is ignition timing not in order.
Igniton module prabably is the problem. Without testing it when it does not start we are just guessing but usually when it acts up only when the car gets hotter it usually points to an ignition issue.
Sounds like a RFID issue. Your key most likely has a chip inside of it. Most of the time people will have multiple keys on their key chain that can cause interference with the receiver in your steering column. Try using the one ignition key to start.
