If the battery is older than 2 years, try a new battery or apply a known good assist (jump) battery.

If that doesn't work and you can determine the noise is coming from the starter, change the starter.

Hope you don't have serious lock up of the engine preventing the starter from turning it over.

SOURCE: My daughtrs 2001 Chevy s10 has an itermitant starting problem.

quick way to tell... next time it won't crank and just clicks... hit it gently with a hammer as you have someone attempt to start it... if all of a sudden it cranks.... it's the starter... replace it before it quites completely.

SOURCE: starter makes whinning noise on 97 camarro

Make sure that starter wears a condom.

If you meant that the starter makes a high-pitched whine but does not turn the engine, that starter is bad. More specifically, its drive (the "Bendix") is bad.

If the starter makes a screeching noise as it turns the engine, like it is working too hard and is irritated about the situation, you need to shim the starter. There are shims available at the parts store that fit around the mounting bolts, between the starter and the block. They are used to ensure that the starter drive gear teeth are not too close to the ring gear. If they are too close, the starter has to work much harder as it forces the teeth to mesh.

If you meant that the starter makes a whining noise for a short while after you start the engine, don't worry. Many starters do that.

If you meant that the starter makes a loud whine constantly after you have started the engine, it is staying engaged. It is either bad and that is the source of the problem, or there is another problem (like incorrect shimming) that caused it to stay engaged, and it is now bad. The same gear reduction that allows a small electric motor to spin a big heavy engine can work in reverse if the one-way clutch in the starter drive goes bad, and the high speeds that the starter guts would be subjected to if this happened would lead to self-destruction.

SOURCE: 94 Mercury sable does not start. had the battery

Hi,
Im new to this site, and i own a 94 merc sable and own the original sable manual. It says that if your engine cranks but does not start you can try to reset the fuel shut off switch. Because if your car has been in a accident or even a minor bump in a parking lot it may have switched itself off. If you have a sedan the switch is on the left side of the trunk, if its a wagon its behind the service panel on the right sid of the cargo area. The fuel pump shutoff switch is the device that automatically stops the flow of fuel to the engine when the car has been in a accident, Bumped by other cars or when you may hit large potholes. needs to be reset by hand.

My old starter on a 1999 ford ranger would spin but not engage the engine to start it. Bought a new starter an it does the same thing. What should i check next?

Starter soups but doesn't engage. Clicking sound: you hear it spinning with a click sound before it starts spinning. No grinding sound. The mechanism to engage the fly wheel could be faulty, probably it is seized, or battery doesn't have enough power to make the solenoid fully pull mechanism (check battery amps charge if low. You may need to look at the starter as someone turns the motor over and make sure it's engaging all the way to fly wheel.
Sometimes you may need to Shem or file down where the two bolts go into the starter too get it far enough into the starter casing to get it to engage.

Toyota corolla. replaced battery.starter. positive and negative terminals and wires. starter spins but does not engage flywheel. slight grinding noise from starter when i turn the key off.. help

I remember on several Toyota Corolllas, the starter solenoid would throw the contact plunger back and make contact from Battery to Starter before the Pinion gear on the starter shaft was fully engaged with the Flywheel Gear. Check for wear on the actuating fork pivot point (Bearing), that throws the gear to the back engaging the ring gear on the flywheel, and makes the contact plate short the terminals to provide current to the starter motor

Starter?

Sounds like you have a weak battery..try giving it a good charge and try again many times engines will not start with a battery that turns the engine over but not fast enough to start.. Good luck.

Starter went out. when i turn on the ignition i hear a click but it will not turn over

It sounds like a weak starter that doesn't have enough battery power to fully engage the over-running clutch of the starter. If you don't want to jump right into replacing that you should check the fuses and relays that have to do with the starter and make sure all of those work.

My 1993 Buick Park Avenue just Clicks once when you turn the key on starter won't engage the battery is fine

Sounds like a bad starter or a bad battery cable connection to me. If you are certain that tyour battery is in good condition and fully charged, your battery cables are clean and tight and are making good connection on BOTH ends, replace the starter.

On my 99 beetle the engine rotates but wont start and when you stop turning the key the engine whines would this be a starter problem?

Could very well be a starter problem, but I typically suggest that one should check out the condition of the battery (may not be throwing sufficient amps to crank the starter), and then the alternator to make certain the alternator is providing enough amps to fully charge the battery.

Sounds like the starter is actually turning, just not fully engaging. when a starter dies 6 out of 10 times it's a bad selenoid (causing a loud clicking sound instead of the starter engaging). Doesn't sound like your immediate problem.

Try jump starting the Beetle. If it starts that was it's probably a battery or alternator issue. If your successful in getting the car started your local autoparts store (AutoZone, Advance Auto or O'Reillys) can test your battery and alternator for Free. Call before you go to make certain that their testing equipment is functioning.
