White smoke just started coming out the exhaust. It smells like gas, not coolant. What could it be?

Has the vehicle been overheating or losing coolant? The symptoms you describe could point towards head gasket trouble (and other faults). Often, the exhaust fumes from a car with a failing head gasket will smell 'pungent' and 'sharp'.

Check the oil on your dipstick. If there's a greyish/cream sludge - sometimes referred to as 'mayonnaise' - this points towards coolant entering the oil system via a leaking head/head gasket.

Also check your coolant - is there any evidence of engine oil in it? Although the mayonnaise on the dipstick is usually the tell-tale sign of gasket problems.

If you suspect the head/head gasket try a special sealant such as:

White smock 2003 vw

If the smoke has a sweet smell to it then it is coolant from an internal leak inside the engine like a head gasket or other source. To confirm that you have a leaking head gasket have a shop problem the coolant recovery/surge tank with a gas analyzer for the presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant tank, this indicates for sure that a head gasket is the cause of the white smoke.

2000 pontiac sunfire starts only when gas pedal is held to floor, idles rough and white smoke comming to exhaust changed IAC valve..no change

If you have excessive white smoke coming from the vehicles exhaust, it sounds like your headgasket is failing. Especially having a rough idle too. Check your coolant level, does your exhaust smoke smell sweet, like Antifreeze? If so, the gasket has blown. Hope this helps...

White smoke from exhaust

That is normal, condensation. Check your coolant level and make sure smoke doesnt smell like coolant. If it is coolant then it is a blown headgasket. Have a repair shop do a quick test.

Gas smell in exhaust

you have either a blown head gasket or cracked head. The white smoke is coolant passing through the engine and exhaust. The gas smell is from compression leaking past the gasket or head, pushing fuel vapor into the air.

Mitusbishi eclipse will not start

YOU HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET THAT IS`ALLOWING THE COOLANT TO GET DRAWN INSIDE THE CYLINDERS AND THAT WOULD EXPLAIN THE WHITE SMOKE(STEAM) IT SMELLS LIKE GAS BECAUSE THE SPARK PLUGS ARE WET WITH WATER/COOLANT. HOPE THIS HELPS. SORRY FOR THE BAD NEWS. IT CAN BE FIXED BUT IT WON'T BE CHEAP. BEST OF LUCK.

White smoke and smell of eggs

White smoke in the exhaust, more so on a cold start. That's steam. Water is getting into the combustion chamber. Most likely coolant.
Put your hand in the white smoke to capture the odor. (don't burn yourself)
What does your hand smell like? Coolant (anti-freeze & water) smells sweet.
Likeliest cause = head gasket. Possible = cracked head - depending on how hot it got. Less likely = cracked intake manifold.
Maybe a blown head gasket
