Drives fine until going up an incline, surges until you give it more gas, 3.1 engine
SOURCE: dies while idling and gas surges going slow
I don't know about the smell of gas, but we had the same problem. the first time it happened, (I don't mean it happened once - it happened repeatedly) a bottle of fuel injector cleaner solved it,
The next time it happened ( a couple years later) I was stranded at the first red light when I got into the city. The car would stall each time i put it in drive. It would idle fine i neutral & park, but stall in and other gear. A guy stopped to help me - he was from a reputable transmission chain. he said the problem was with ? ?? in the transmission ( I can't remember exactly 0 it was about years ago) he fiddled with a switch that locked up in behind the drivers side front tire. he couldn't get it unlocked, so the car was towed to his transmission shop. They repaired the problem and I have not had this issue since!
SOURCE: Transmission wont engage or disengages
Per your description, it sounds like you have a forward clutch assembly that is failing.
Has the transmission been serviced, filter and fluid exchange?
Is this a very "high milage" car?
Let me know.
Regards,

Couple of issues I would check into. First, I would look for vacuum leaks. A large vacuum leak could cause the complaint that you have. Also look for intake air leaks between the air filter housing and the intake manifold. The second place I would start looking is the Idle air control motor or (IAC), this is the component that mounts to the throttle body and controls the idle speed. If it becomes caked with carbon or just malfunctions it can produce the problem you have. I am pretty sure one of these areas will be your issue.

COULD BE WEAK FUEL PUMP OR STOPPED UP FUEL FILTER THE.FUEL PRESSURE SUPPOSE TO BE 41 - 47 PSI.
