What make and model? It is possible that the unplugged sensor is for the speedo / odo, since the pulses for the speedo and hence the odo is picked up from the final drive on the transmission.
Note, it is only a possibility, we need more information.
the transfer case control module is located behind the left side of dash behind the headlight switch, you will need to remove the speedo trim around speedometer, then pull put the headlight switch. the module is just snaped into place. also keep in mind, the module has to programmed with software for it to work correclty. in other words, the replacement module will have to be programmed after installing
The vehicle speed sensor is located in the transfer case housing. To get your speedometer working you will have to connect the wires back to the speed sensor.
check out speedo transducer, wires damaged?
remove and check gears are not damaged or worn
lives on right hand side of rear section of transfer case
it needs this signal for speedo and trans shifts as well as over drive to work
check wire/wiring connector on right rear section of transfer case.
disconnect wire connector and remove and inspect gear drive for worn teeth including gear inside case.
There should be a bolt and clamp holding the spedo gear housing in to the trans. If you find out there is no problem with gear. If your cable was broken and you replaced with universal cable make sure that it is long enough to be engaging into the spedo and the gear. I guess if all of that fails it would just about have to be the spedo itself. Good Luck
