Reply to vernon taylor...... I will check the o2 sensor tomorrow but if needed can I clean the o2 sensor

  • Anonymous Jan 11, 2016

And yes I removed the throttle body to clean it

  • Vernon Taylor Jan 11, 2016

As you removed the throttle body contamination by cleaning fluid is unlikely. The small slots of the O2 sensor that allow ingress of gas to be analysed can sometimes be blocked or partially blocked by soot and gently cleaned but cleaning the element is not possible except by use of a fuel additive.

An air leak is likely to cause a lean mixture in most circumstances, rather than a rich mixture.

I am wondering whether you removed the throttle body to clean it? Cleaning in situ can send cleaning solution into the cylinders to be burned or coat the oxygen sensor and converter.

I suggest you double-check your work and ensure the correct throttle position sensor has been correctly fitted and then a thorough visual check to be certain no wires or pipes have been accidentally dislodged, etc. A code read would be a good idea and erase any codes that might be stored and then re-test.

If that doesn't improve matters the live engine data will need to be checked. Coincidences do happen sometimes...

SOURCE: 1993 Toyota Camry IAC cleaning

1) remove the black intake hose from the throttle body
2) get a can of throttle body/intake cleaner
3) be VERY careful if you decide to use the straw included with the can of cleaner, it can detach and go inside of your intake manifold.
4) spray inside and use a rag to remove junk from throttle plate(front and back side), hold the straw on the cleaner can and spray into the hole just ahead of the throttle plate, let soak for 10 minutes or so
5) reattach intake hose and start engine - you may get black smoke/rough idle for a minute as junk exits the engine

i would not just go buy a tps on a guess
first check to see if you can bring the throttle up by hand at the motor where the throttle cable connects to the throttle body it may be a cable that broke

SOURCE: on a 04 camry with 2.4 ltr engine, can I replace

I think the terms "Throttle Positon Sensor", TPS and "Throttle Body" can be misleading at least in regards to the 04 Camry.

My 04 Camry gave a diagnostic reading of P2121 for my problem "Throttle PEDAL position switch D circuit". However, we changed out the complete Throttle Body/TPS (Toyota Part #22030-0H020) that did NOT fix problem.

The 04 Camry TPS Electronic Module "Throttle Positon Sensor" is factory assembled and riveted to the side of the throttle body. The only way to service/inspect it would be to cut off or drill out the rivets. Not sure you could open the darn thing if you got it off, but that seems to be the only way Toyota sells them!!

Hopefully a new Throttle PEDAL Position Sensor (Toyota Part # 78010-33010 PEDAL ASSY, ACC)
will fix it. This is located under the dash near the accelerator pedal.

So, now I would recommend FIRST to replace the "Throttle PEDAL Positon Sensor" (it is much, much cheaper) and then the Throttle Body/TPS assembly!! Unless of course, you get a diagnostic code as you did for "faulty throttle body!!

Not 100% sure on your exact car but nissan TPS usually are on the opposite side of the TB from the butterfly return spring.

Have a 95 tacoma run normal when cold starts sputtering when warm

Don't know if this will help or not. I had a 1991 Camry that ran fine until it got warm. Would sputter and stall. I cleaned and messed with the throttle body adjustment until it ran OK. Can't remember what I did but there was some sort of adjustment on the throttle body. Good luck.

Won't pass smog, Rich idle.

First, is the check engine light on ?
You should have a code for the O2 sensor showing the exhaust gas is rich.
Could be a faulty injector, fuel pressure regulator, or O2 sensor.
Even a faulty thermostat would do it.

At the point where the air intake hose is connected to the engine is a part called the "throttle body". the TPS is attached to the outside of the throttle body. See picture below.

1991 camry running rich on fuel and stalls when idling

Do the following to clean the intake, this should help with the rich run. Also change the oil, it will be full of fuel.
Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (it is made by CRC) from the local auto parts store, NEVER USE CARB CLEANING SPRAY, IT DESTROYS THE ANTI-STICK TEFLON COATING, spray it into the air intake through the throttle body of the engine until you have used about half the can, you will need to hold the idle up while you do this, it will try to stall, after this shut the engine down and disconnect the Negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes. The intake is now clean, if you continue to have the idle speed control problems you may need to seek the help of a professional

94 camry. 2.2 fed emissions. Rough idle. runs great any rpm off idle. have checked timing. vacuum leaks, plugs, spark, removed throttle body and iac and cleaned. removed egr. plugged intake. all with no...

Before we both knock ourselves out with fuel injector testing. Hook up a Digital voltmeter (DVM) to upstream O2 sensor and lets see how she is burning. Remember positive lead of DVM to signal wire and negative lead to ground. Anything above 550 mV is rich anything below 350mV is lean. Be mindful that an exhaust leak the size of a pin hole in this region can cause a rough idle. A healthy reading should bounce between 550mV and 350 mV.
Next to test is O2 is working block off air in take making mixture rich and see what O2 says about it . Then pull off a vacuum hose (a lean condition) and see if DVM drops to 200to 300mV's.
Keep me posted.

1991 toyota pickup dies when you release the gas pedal

There are couple of things I would check out that would cause this problem.

1. The Mass Air Flow Sensor. It measures how much air is going into the engine. Should be located on top of air filter box.

2. The air tube that goes from the Mass Air Flow Sensor to the throttle body. Check for leaks that would bypass air from going through the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

3. The Throttle Position Sensor. Located on the throttle body. This tells the computer what position the butterfly plate is on the throttle body. You control this plate with the gas pedal..

Engine doen't stay idle at steady rpms rev up and down by itself

Either you have a vacuum leak, a bad throttle body position sensor, or a bad throttle body.

If the throttle body is drive by wire (electronic) then it would be a bad throttle body.

If the throttle body is drive by cable (manually driven by a cable connected to the gas peddle) then it would be a bad throttle position sensor.

If the throttle body is bad the check engine light wil lbe on. If it is on have your codes read at your local parts dealer for free, and this will give you a clue as to which pices/parts you need to replace.

Have the car leak tested and the vacuum linse inspected for leaks as well.

1991 Camry running rich

check for vacuum leaks especially around the intake manifold gasket. Although the engine appears to be running rich, it could also be misfiring due to being too lean in one cylinder. When the cylinder doesn't fire the charge, it goes into the exhaust completely unburned and looks like a rich running condition due to the unburned fuel. If it is a vacuum leak causing the problem, the engine will run fine at road speeds but misfire at idle and not pass smog.
