Will turn over ,but will not fire - 1990 Dodge Dakota

on the four stroke right hand ( clockwise ) turning engine the firing order is 1-3-4-2 but there are some exceptions on European model. The firing order is also clockwise set because your engine is right hand turn. For you if you like to see also what I stated you can remove the distributor cap if you know how,and by starting the engine you will see the rotor arm turning clockwise.

Replace coil packs. I got mine at Autozone, they will help you install.

fuel shutoff relay..

from your description it sounds like your timing belt. to check your can remove the cover and have someone else turn the key. if belt stays not turning, it is stripped and needs replacement.

If the plugs aren't firing then it won't turn over. You must have something else going on. "turns over" to me means it is getting fuel and the plugs are firing. Are you sure it is turning over? If it isn't turning over then the starter is grinding away and nothing is happening or you just hear a clicking noise but when a car is turning over you hear it running, meaning it is firing on all or some cylinders.

Almost fires? Do you mean it does fire some, that you know the plugs are getting spark? If so, then you probably need to have your fuel pressure tested to see if pump is working properly. Can you hear the pump buzz on briefly when you turn key to on? It should come on for a couple of seconds to pressurize the lines. If you don't hear it, then your pump may be bad, or something not turning pump on. Good luck.

Same problem yesterday,so I hit on the gas tank while someone turn her over and it started right up.

sounds like the coil is bad

It sounds like either the relay for the fuel pump and\or fuse is bad or the crankshaft sensor is not picking up a signal which is located by the crankshaft pulley

make sure you have the right firing order for the spark plug wires from the disbutor to the spark plugs. thats the most common for motor turns over and briefly fires and then dies. try looking up the firing order for the spark plug wires.
