Sean, the only suggestion I can give in this case is. It sounds like it may be flooding out. This could be because of leaking injectors. What happens is when you turn the engine off the injector will continue to leak into the cylinder until there is an abundance of gas then when you try to start the engine the gas needs to clear before it will start and your smelling all that raw fuel being pushed out of the tail pipe. If you are mechanically inclined then remove the fuel rail and while watching the tips turn the key to the on position. CAUTION: DO NOT try to start the engine, simply turn the key to the on position. If one are more injectors are leaking after turning the key off then replace the leaking injectors. NOTE: Sometimes carbon build-up on the injector tip will also cause then to leak. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Sean.

I would guess that one or more of the spark plugs, or spark plug (high tension leads) have failed. That would cause the engine to run uneven , off balance,and create fuel vapours due to unburned fuel.

Worse case scenario it could be leak on fuel injectors or fuel line, if possible have some turn engine over with hood open, if you can see or smell fresh fuel, get professional assistance as this is a extreme fire hazard.

Fuel pressure at idle is normally 30-35psi. Start by taking the gas cap off, and putting it back on. That will De-pressurize the fuel system. Also, make sure you have gas in the car. I have seen gauges on these cars read wrong. I hope this helps.

Mine did same thing,replaced fuel filter and no more problem

Check all of the fuel lines very carefully for breaks or cracks in the fuel lines, especially between the fuel tank and the fuel pump.

If the fuel lines are all in good condition then you can safely assume that the problem is in the fuel pump and you will need to replace it. (If the fuel pump is in really bad shape the engine oil on the end of the engine oil dip-stick will smell like fuel)

The filter is inside the tank. could have a fuel leak, thats why it smells. I would ck it cold, turn the key so that the fuel system pressurizes, then follow the lines and look for a leak. ck any joints, and at the injectors.

try this,, pump the gas a few times and take your foot of the gas then turn the key over and see what that does.. let me know
