I am experiencing unusually high amount of smoke from exhaust at starting my 2010 Sienna CE 61k. Also sometime the car exhausts more smoke when accelerated. Tried Techron twice, but problem persist.

  • Anonymous Jan 04, 2016

    thanks for this response.
The smoke appears to be light blue and it lasts a few seconds during 1st startup in morning and in evening. Also I could see the smoke sometimes during a quick acceleration.
Is the problem serious ? I just got the oil changes 2 weeks back. What exactly i need to get checked with mechanic ?
    Help much appreciated...thanks

You appear to be burning oil. Unless it is fixed you have to make sure to constantly check your oil level and replenish as necessary. Not a cheap fix since the engine has to be taken apart - if old car i would just deal with the burning.

Color of smoke tells it all -

Black smoke is excess carbon - needs more air for combustion
Grey smoke is oil burning - not good - maybe bad rings
White smoke is steam - leaking head gasket allowing coolant to burn

SOURCE: white smoke coming from exhaust when accelerating

This is usually an indication of a bad head gasket.I gasket. The white smoke is the coolant leaking out of the engine and winding up in the oil passages, due to a bad head gasket. To confirm this,
1. check oil. Is level increased, or milky appearance?
2. Is coolant level dropping, but u don't see any signs of leaks?
The above indicates a bad head gasket, causing the white smoke u describe. Let me know how u make out.

SOURCE: White smoke coming out of the exhaust when starting?

Hello;
Volumes of white smoke is an indication of water in the exhaust. A certain amount of vapor will be present on start up, but if it is different than what has been the norm for this vehicle then a check of the cooling system is in order.

SOURCE: not accelerating and letting white smoke out exhaust

it sounds like the engine coolant is leaking into the combustion chambers most likely due to a leaky head gasket or a cracked cylinder head and will cause loose of power in acceleration

SOURCE: Jag X TYPE Diesel Black smoke coming from exhaust on acceleration

i had this problem and thought the fuel filter oil filter needed replacing so i have just had a service done but problem is still there but not as bad. been told it could be the AGR valve or a split pipe going to it which recuirculates unused fuel back to burn again. therefore unspent fuel is coming out of the exhaust causing the black smoke. i am still looking for the answer aswell, hope this helps.

Isuzu 3000/Diesel/Turbo/Wizard, I can see a bit of Oil coming from Intake/ThroughBody direct to the Turbo & there also a White Smoke from the exhaust + Misfiring and the car is not pooling as uses to be......

white smoke from the exhaust.. sounds like you have blown a head or intake gasket,, you have antifreeze/coolant getting into the fuel mixture.. CHECK your oil for water/coolant/antifreeze contamination...These are the symptoms that your describe.. if you have oil contamination, DO NOT crank the engine again UNTIL AFTER you get it repaired...

please mark as helpful..thanks

Why is my 2000 kia sephia blowing blue smoke from the tailpipe. it has 86,000 miles. the check oil warning light is on even though the dipstick reads full.

The most common cause of blue exhaust smoke is oil leaking past engine seals and into the cylinders where it then mixes and burns with the fuel. This is most frequently seen in older or high mileage cars with worn seals and gaskets. It only requires a very small amount of oil leaking into the cylinders to cause excessive blue exhaust smoke.

Blue exhaust smoke only at start-up can indicate worn piston seals or damaged or worn valve guides which may also cause a rattling noise. An external engine oil leak can drip onto hot engine and exhaust parts causing what appears to be blue exhaust smoke. Other possible causes of blue exhaust smoke include: piston wear, worn valve seals, a dirty or non-functioning PCV valve, worn piston rings, an intake manifold gasket leak, worn engine oil seals and possibly even head gasket failure.

Oil leaking into the cylinders can cause a rough idle, misfire and fouled spark plugs. In addition, a reduction in power and oil loss can be indicators that the blue exhaust smoke is caused by an internal engine oil leak. Internal engine oil leaks can also allow fuel to mix with the oil in the crankcase which will degrade the oil and prevent it from adequately protecting the engine.

Operating a car with a severely dirty oil filter, air filter or improperly functioning PCV valve can also sometimes result in engine oil blow-by, oil loss and blue exhaust smoke. Periodically checking the engine oil level with the oil dip stick will indicate if there is excessive oil consumption. Higher viscosity engine oil can sometimes temporarily reduce the amount of blow-by; however, this is not generally recommended. Excessive blue exhaust smoke indicates a possible internal engine oil leak that should be inspected by an ASE certified mechanic.

White smoke in sienna 2002 for 10 sec

When starting from cold? That is normal from the exhaust. If it is coming from the engine bay it is probably an oil leak onto the exhaust.

Exhaust smoke definitely not steam. Someone opined that it may be related to the turbo/exhaust system. What do you think?

A worn turbo or broken would create smoke. Blue or Gray smoke is either worn rings or a clogged PCV. White smoke is from foreign fluid entering the engine. Typically indicative of a head gasket leak. Black smoke is Leaking injectors or an ignition problem or an issue with the turbo.
If you are experiencing a loss in power then you most likely have a worn turbo bearing.

How do you know if you have a blown head gasket

The classic signs to look for are engine over-heating with bluish-grey smoke from the exhaust pipe and it might be smoking excessively, look for coolat present in the engine oil, the engine oil will float on top of the coolant so if the engine oil is reading unusually high on the dip-stick you can loosen the engine oil drain plug just enough until it starts to drip fluid, and if that fluid is water or coolant then you might have a blown head gasket or an intake manifold leak, and if you have all of the symptoms of a head gasket without the smoke from the exhaust pipe it might just be the intake manifold.
