Except 2.2L and 1993-96 3.1L Engines
See Figure 1
  1. Raise the intermediate shaft seal and remove intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the pressure hoses from the steering gear.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from both tie rod ends. Using tool J-6627 or BT-7101, press the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  5. If equipped with an Air Management pipe, remove the bracket bolt from the crossmember.
  6. Remove the 2 rear cradle mounting bolts and lower the rear of the cradle about 4-5 in. (102-127mm).

WARNING
If the rear of the cradle is lowered too far, the engine components nearest the cowl may be damaged.
  1. If equipped, remove the rack and pinion heat shield.

  1. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, then the gear assembly through the left wheel opening.
To install:
  1. Install the gear assembly through the left wheel opening and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Install the heat shield.
  3. Raise the rear of the cradle and install the mounting bolts.
  4. Install the bracket bolt to the crossmember under the air management pipe.
  5. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles, install the retaining nuts and insert new cotter pins.
  6. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  7. Install the high pressure hoses to the steering gear and install the air cleaner.
  8. Install the intermediate shaft seal and the intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Install an engine support fixture J-28467-A, or the equivalent.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  6. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from stub shaft.

CAUTION
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.
  1. Remove the exhaust pipe hanger bracket near rear of frame including the brake line retainer and rubber exhaust pipe hangers.
  2. Remove the engine and transaxle mount nuts at the subframe.
  3. Support the rear of the subframe with jack stands.
  4. Remove the rear subframe bolts and discard.
  5. Lower the subframe for access to rack and pinion.
Do not lower the rear of the cradle too far, as damage to engine components nearest the cowl may result.
  1. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts from the outer tie rod ends and separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a suitable puller.

How to replace rack an pinion cutlass ciera 1992

You aren't saying what engine is in it, or whether it is manual or power steering. Here is the R/R procedure for power steering rack for all engine sizes.

Except 2.2L and 1993-96 3.1L Engines
See Figure 1
  1. Raise the intermediate shaft seal and remove intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the pressure hoses from the steering gear.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from both tie rod ends. Using tool J-6627 or BT-7101, press the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  5. If equipped with an Air Management pipe, remove the bracket bolt from the crossmember.
  6. Remove the 2 rear cradle mounting bolts and lower the rear of the cradle about 4-5 in. (102-127mm).

WARNING
If the rear of the cradle is lowered too far, the engine components nearest the cowl may be damaged.
  1. If equipped, remove the rack and pinion heat shield.

    Park the vehicle on a level surface and make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead. Make sure the vehicle is in park (or in gear if you have manual transmission) and set the parking brake.

    Disconnect the pitman arm from the steering box from underneath the front of the vehicle by turning the holding bolt in a counterclockwise direction with an adjustable wrench. Place a pitman arm puller (available at auto parts stores) over the pitman arm and tighten the nut on the puller in a clockwise direction with an adjustable wrench until the pitman arm loosens from the steering box shaft. Remove the pitman arm and the puller.

    Open the hood and loosen the lock nut on top of the steering box from the engine compartment with an adjustable wrench in a counterclockwise direction.

    Place a torque wrench on the steering shaft and turn the wrench one complete turn. Make sure the torque reading is approximately 2 inch pounds. Tighten the adjusting nut on top of the steering box (it comes out of the center of the lock nut) in a clockwise direction with an adjustable wrench one half turn if the torque wrench reading is too low. Loosen the nut in a counterclockwise direction if the reading is too high.

    Rotate the steering shaft with the torque wrench again. Make adjustments to the steering box adjusting nut as described in Step 4, if needed, until the correct reading is obtained on the torque wrench.

    Make sure the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position and reattach the pitman arm to the bottom of the steering shaft on the steering box. Tighten the holding nut in a clockwise direction with an adjustable wrench until the pitman arm seats into place.

    Tighten the lock nut on top of the steering box with an adjustable wrench in a clockwise direction. Close the hood

    How to change rear ball joints on 2002 dodge stratus

    Instructions
    1. Remove the Upper Control Arm
      • 1Disconnect the ground battery cable using a wrench.
      • Loosen the front wheel lugs located on the same side of the upper ball joint you need to replace. Use a lug wrench.
      • Raise that same front wheel off the ground using a floor jack and support the vehicle on a jack stand.
      • Finish removing the tire.
      • Take the cotter pin off the upper ball joint stud holding the steering knuckle arm. Use a pair of nose pliers.
      • Remove the castle nut from the upper ball joint stud using a wrench or ratchet, ratchet extension and deep socket.
      • Loosen the two bolts securing the back of the upper control arm to the mounting bracket. Use a wrench to hold the bolt head as you loosen the retaining nut with a ratchet and socket.
      • Pull the control-arm ball joint off the steering knuckle arm. You may need to use a Pitman arm puller to free the ball joint.
      • Finish removing the two bolts from the back of the upper control arm and lift the upper control arm off the vehicle.
      Install the New Upper Control Arm
      • Set the new upper control arm in place and install the two bolts and retaining nuts to secure the back of the upper control arm to the mounting bracket. Remember the bolt heads should point inward toward the shock absorber with the retaining nuts on the outside of the mounting bracket. Do not tighten the bolts yet.
      • 11Insert the control-arm ball joint on the steering knuckle arm and start the castle nut with your hand over the ball joint stud. Do not tighten the nut yet.
      • Tighten the two bolts on the mounting bracket to 67-foot lbs. (91 Nm) using a torque wrench. Hold the bolts with a backup wrench as you tighten the retaining nuts with the torque wrench.
      • Tighten the ball-joint castle nut to 45-foot lbs. (61 Nm) using the torque wrench, ratchet extension and deep socket.
      • Install a new cotter pin through the joint-ball stud hole using the nose pliers. If necessary, tighten the castle nut just a few degrees to clear the stud hole through one of the castle nut slots.
      • Mount the tire on the wheel assembly and install the wheel lugs using the lug wrench.
      • Lower the vehicle and finish tightening the wheel lugs.

    I need a diagram and instuctions to replace a alternator

    Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Release the tension on the accessory drive belt so that you can remove the drive belt from the pulley.Take off the mounting bolt on the right side of the alternator with a socket wrench and remove the bracket for the power steering hose. Remove the mounting bolts on top of the alternator, the front passenger wheel and tire assembly and the front fender splash shield. Remove the alternator splash shield with a socket wrench and take off the inspection cover for the torque converter. Mount a tool to hold the flywheel so you can remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley. Lower the alternator so you can unplug its electrical connections. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor and Oxygen sensor connector. Remove the lower alternator mounting bolt and B+ connector nut to remove the alternator. Install the new alternator assembly by reversing the above procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten the B+ connector nut to 71 inch lbs. and the lower alternator bolt to 18 foot pounds. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 74 foot pounds, the upper alternator bolts to 18 foot pounds and the nut for the power steering hose bracket to 13 foot pounds

    My rack and pion is leaking , how do i replace

    To Remove:
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section. NOTE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly (clock spring) to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the assembly.
    2. Lock the steering column by installing the J42640 into the underside of the steering column.
    3. Raise and support the vehicle.
    4. Remove the tires and wheels.
    5. Remove the power steering gear heat shield.
    6. Remove or disconnect the following: CAUTION
      Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control, which could result in personal injury.
      • Intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt and coupling from gear
      • Pressure and return pipes from the gear
      • Electrical connector, if equipped
        Stabilizer shaft links at lower control arms
      • Remove the left stabilizer shaft insulator.
      • Rotate the stabilizer shaft to access steering gear bolts.
      • The outer tie rod retaining nuts.
      • Using J24319-B separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.
      • Rack and pinion attaching bolts
      • Rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel opening.
    7. Transfer the outer tie rods if replacing the power steering gear.
    To Install:
    1. Install or connect the following:
      • Rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel opening and tighten the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
      • Electrical connector, if equipped
        Pressure and return lines to the steering gear and tighten the fittings to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
      • Heat shield and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 7 ft. Lbs. (10 N)
      • Install the left stabilizer shaft insulator.
    2. Install stabilizer shaft Links to lower control arms
    3. Intermediate shaft to the steering gear and tighten the pinch bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
    4. Install the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles.
    5. Install the outer tie rods retaining nuts. torque the nuts to 22ft.lbs(30 Nm) plus an additional 180 degrees.
    6. Install the tires and wheels.
    7. Lower the vehicle.
    8. Remove the steering column anti rotation pin from the steering column.
    9. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
    10. Adjust the front toe.

    Lock the steering column by installing the Steering Column Anti Rotation Pin tool J 42640 into the underside of the steering column--Aurora

    Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear Heat Shield Removal & Installation To Remove:
    1. Raise and support the vehicle.
    2. Remove or disconnect the following:
      • The stabilizer shaft links.
      • Rotate the stabilizer shaft downward.
      • The electrical harness clip.
      • Power steering gear heat shield mounting bolts.
      • The heat shield.
    To Install:
    1. Install the power steering gear heat shield.
    2. Install or connect the following:
      • The mounting bolts And torque to 89in.lbs.(10 Nm)
      • The electrical harness clip.
      • Rotate the stabilizer shaft into position.
      • The stabilizer shaft links.
    3. Lower the vehicle.

    you can buy remanufactured at parts store or buy used from car-part.com. page with * is lowest cost.

    It's a pretty big job for a novice.

    here's 96 taurus steps with 3.8l engine. don't have 94. should be similar

    Removal
    SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Tool Number Description T94T-6000-AH Exhaust Connector Holder Tool T57L-500-B Bench Mounted Holding Fixture
    1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
    1. Position steering wheel one-half turn to right and lock wheel.
    1. Position steering column boot out of the way. Remove pinch bolt retaining steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power steering short rack and separate.
    1. Disconnect PCV vent tube and vacuum supply hose from clean air tube. Loosen two hose clamps retaining clean air tube and position out of the way.
    1. Disconnect power steering auxiliary actuator and power steering pressure switch.
    1. Remove two heat shield pushpin retainers from power steering hose bracket and remove heat shield.
    1. Remove one retaining bolt from left turn pressure hose bracket.
    1. Position drain pan under steering gear.
    1. Remove power steering pressure and return hoses from fittings on power steering rack. Position both hoses out of the way. Disconnect rear HO2S connector at steering rack and position out of the way.
    1. Partially raise vehicle.
    1. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
    1. Remove LH upper stabilizer bar link retaining nut and position link out of the way.
    1. Loosen LH tie-rod jam nut. Remove cotter pin and tie-rod retaining nut at lower control arm. Using tie-rod end separator or equivalent, remove tie-rod from control arm and from steering gear.
    1. Loosen RH tie-rod jam nut. Remove cotter pin and tie-rod retaining nut at lower control arm. Using tie-rod end separator or equivalent, remove tie-rod from control arm and from steering gear.
    1. Raise vehicle.
    1. Remove drain pan.
    1. Remove two steering gear retaining nuts at front subframe.
    1. Install Exhaust Connector Holder Tool T94T-6000-AH on flex tube.
    1. Remove bolts, nuts, and gasket from where flex tube and converter Y-pipe connect. Separate tube from pipe.
    1. Position Rotunda Power Train Lift 014-00765 or equivalent with wood blocks approximately 1016 mm (40 inches) in length (secured to lift) under subframe and raise.
    1. Remove two rear subframe retaining bolts and lower subframe approximately 102 mm (4 inches).
    1. Rotate power steering rack to clear bolts from subframe and remove assembly through LH wheel well.
    1. Remove two bolts retaining power steering hose bracket to short rack and remove bracket.
    1. Mount steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B.
    1. Remove four clamps retaining bellows to steering gear and tie-rods. Remove bellows and power steering gear rack tube.
    1. Position rack and pinion steering gear so several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear with adjustable wrench on end teeth only, while loosening inner tie-rods. Remove tie-rods from steering rack. Remove steering rack from bench-mounted holding fixture.
    Installation
    1. Mount new steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B.
    1. Position rack and pinion steering gear so several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear with adjustable wrench on end teeth only, while tightening inner tie-rods. Tighten to 90-110 Nm (66-81 lb-ft).
    1. Apply Steering Gear Grease C3AZ-19518-A meeting Ford specification ESB-M1C119-A to groove in connecting rods where tie-rod bellows clamp to front wheel spindle tie-rod and uniformly apply to inner diameter of bellows. Install bellows and gear rack tube onto short rack.
    1. Install new inner and outer bellows clamps.
    1. Remove steering gear from Bench Mounted Holding Fixture and place on bench.
    1. Install power steering hose bracket and retaining bolts at top of steering gear. Tighten to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in).
    1. Install steering gear retaining bolts in steering gear housing and install short rack through LH wheel well.
    1. Position steering rack and retaining bolts through subframe. Raise powertrain lift until rear subframe contacts body and install retaining bolts. Tighten to 135-195 Nm (100-144 lb-ft). Lower and remove powertrain lift from vehicle.
    1. Install power steering short rack-to-subframe nuts. Tighten to 97-132 Nm (72-97 lb-ft).
    1. Install new gasket, bolts and nuts at converter Y-pipe and flex tube. Tighten to 34-46 Nm (26-34 lb-ft).
    1. Remove flex tube holder.
    1. Partially lower vehicle.
    1. Install LH jam nut and outer tie-rod to inner tie-rod. Install tie-rod to steering knuckle. Install retaining nut. Tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). Install new cotter pin.
    1. Install LH stabilizer bar link and retaining nut. Tighten to 76.5-103.5 Nm (57-76 lb-ft).
    1. Install RH jam nut and outer tie-rod to inner tie-rod. Install tie-rod to steering knuckle. Install retaining nut. Tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). Install new cotter pin.
    1. Install tire and wheel assemblies. Tighten to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft).
    1. Lower vehicle.
    1. Remove old Teflon® O-rings from pressure and return hoses. Install new Teflon® O-rings on pressure and return hoses.
    1. Install power steering pressure hose and return hose to fittings on power steering short rack. Tighten to 33-41 Nm (24-30 lb-ft).
    1. Install one retaining bolt to left-turn pressure hose bracket. Tighten to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in).
    1. Connect rear HO2S connectors, power steering auxiliary actuator, and power steering pressure switch electrical connectors.
    1. Position heat shield at power steering hose bracket and install pushpin retainers.
    1. Install clean air tube, connect PCV vent tube and vacuum supply hose, and tighten hose clamps. Tighten to 2-3 Nm (18-27 lb-in).
    1. Install steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power steering short rack and install pinch bolt. Tighten to 41-51 Nm (30-38 lb-ft). Position steering column boot over steering rack.
    1. Fill and purge system.
    1. Check operation.
    1. Adjust only toe for alignment. Refer to Section 04-00 .

    How do i change inner tie rod , do i need a special tool.

    i think steering gear has to be removed to get rubber bellows off to access tie rod.

    Disassembly
    1. NOTE: Drill out mounting holes in holding fixture with a 9/16 inch drill to allow the power rack and pinion steering gear assembly mounting bolts to fit.

    1. Remove tie rod ends (3A130).

      Remove four clamps retaining bellows to steering gear housing (3548) and front wheel spindle tie rods (3280). Discard clamps if damaged or excessively corroded.
    1. NOTE: Steering gear does not use rivets or roll pins between the inner front wheel spindle tie rod and rack.

      Remove bellows along with power steering gear rack tube (3K762).
    1. Position power rack and pinion steering gear so that several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear sector shaft (3575) with an adjustable wrench on end teeth only while loosening ball joint nuts.
    Assembly
    1. Expose several steering gear teeth and hold steering gear with adjustable wrench.
    1. Tighten each front wheel spindle tie rod separately to 90-110 Nm (67-81 lb-ft).
    1. Thoroughly clean steering gear and steering gear housing bore of any foreign material. Any abrasive material is extremely harmful to high-pressure oil seals.
    1. Apply Steering Gear Grease C3AZ-19578-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M1C87-A to groove in front wheel spindle tie rod where tie rod bellows clamp to front wheel spindle tie rod and uniformly to inner diameter of tie rod bellows before installation. This allows for toe-in adjustment without twisting tie rod bellows.
    1. Install tie rod bellows and power steering gear rack tube. Make sure power steering gear rack tube is positioned as shown.
