the problem is in the voltage regulator
maximum voltage is controlled at 14.5 to 14.8 volts depending on whether the voltage regulator is in the ECM or not
but 14.8 would be max allowed any higher can damage the electronics of the vehicle including the ECM
take it to an accredited auto electrician, have it test and adjusted or the regulator replaced
get another battery test battery voltage should be 12v start your engine test again should read 14v any figure above 14v is dangerous note some batteries has negative effect on alternator output.
To check if alternator is charging! Connect a volt meter to the battery and start the vehicle......the volt meter should read above 12 volts, if lower then alternator not charging properly!
The light will come on if the system is over charging. No system I know of charges at 18 volts. That is way too much. You need to have the alternator checked out. Most system charge at 14.5 to 15 volts at the most. You will burn out something major if not fixed. you can go by most auto part stores and they will check it out for free.
Yes It sounds like the voltage regulator inside the alternator has gone wide open .It can also ruin your battery and explode the battery.I would have it hooked up to a alternator tester and just to make sure it's not just your gauge.hope this helps
need to have alternator output checked. sounds like the voltage regulator is going out. this is inside alternator.if it starts charging this high it can blow your bulbs and damage computers
you need to find the volt. reg. and the wires from the reg. go to the alt. the field doesn't get strait bat volt. but 13 or 14 volt isn't bad, but if your wires are rite than your reg. is bad. 18 volt is to high!!!
