Replacing trunk brake light housing - 2003 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

Open Trunk

Pull back trunk liner

Remove 3 nuts holding
tail light housing on

Pull housing away from body & replace bulb

Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (coupe)

1. Make sure the headlamp control

is in the OFF position and then

open the hatchback.

2. From inside the luggage

compartment remove the wing nut

of the rear light assembly cover.

3. Using a Phillips screw driver

remove the screw. The lamp is still

retained by a spring loaded clip.

Remove by gently pulling out the

light housing.

4. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise as far as possible and pull it

out.

5. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.

Install in reverse order.

Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (sedan)

1. Make sure the headlamp control

is in the OFF position and then

open the trunk.

2. From inside the luggage

compartment remove the three wing

nuts of the light housing.

3. Gently pull the light housing to

the outside.

4. Turn the bulb socket

counterclockwise and pull it out.

5. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
Install in reverse order.

Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (wagon)

1. Make sure the headlamp control

is in the OFF position and then

open the hatchback.

2. Using a screw driver remove the

fixings and trim from the body.

3. Remove the socket from the lamp

assembly

4. Pull the bulb straight out of the

socket.
Install in reverse order.

Open trunk. look for plastic access panels near where your brake lights are(inside trunk). Remove the panels. Turn bulb housing counterclockwise until you can remove the housing from the lens unit. Push in bulb and turn a little bit counterclockwise until it will come out of the socket. Read the number on the bulb. Replace with same number bulb. Installation is the reverse of removal.

some of these are done from the trunk, open trunk and look for socket if its closed in then just go inside car and gentle pry rear cover off third brake light housing, once cover is off you can change bulb and more more required then remove housing.

Directly underneath the Center Brake light assembly , under the lip of the trunk deck. Access to the Lights for the center Brake light are also there. It's set in a housing unprotected, easy to spot.

through the trunk you have to remove the trim material/trunk lining around the back of the light housings and remove the bulbs

1.) unplug the connector in the trunk (its a small white plug running up to the third light, there should be a small clip you squeeze).

2.) remove the 2 gold-colored screws from inside the trunk. They can be seen from the trunk. 1 is thru the larger square opening where the wire connects to the 3rd brake light. The 2nd is on the right side thru a small (screwdriver width) hole covered by a piece of foam tape stuff I had to punch me screwdriver through the foam to get to it.

3.) after removing the 2 screws, go inside the cabin and the brake light housing pops up.

4.) disconnect the bulb from the housing while inside the cabin (I had to do this with me two forefingers since the housing only pops up and inch or two).

5.) in the trunk remove the wire and bulb. (it's about 5 inches long. the wire from the connector to the bulb socket)

6.) reverse steps to install.

It is a pain and reqiuires a bit of time only because there isn't a lot of room to move around, but it beats taking it to the dealershio!

Okay you need to lift your trunk remove any carpeting remove hidden screws to undo light fixture be careful not to drop the case once case is in your hand remove the appropriate bulb that needs replacing after wards reinstall light housing/casing and screws good luck with this. tail light bulbs are replaced by removing the tail light housings. The housings are accessed by removing the nuts, the nuts are secured behind the inner trunk liner inside the trunk. Remove fasteners holding liner in place, remove 3 nuts for each housing(i believe it's 3 nuts if my memory serves me right), remove housing and replace bulbs

This is how i did it on my 2006 Sonata
