I had a similar problem with my ford contour. I replaced my throttle position sensor, that took care of the problem.
With car in ignition turned on, (car not running) check the voltage at the sensor. Should be 5 vdc. The two out side pins is where you check. If I remember the top pin is the positive and bottom is negative. Now you want to check feedback voltage. Put one probe to negative and the other to the middle pin. With throttle plate closed it should read around .5 volts (I've also seen people adust them to .94 volts). Check specs for your car. Now move throttle plate you should see the increase of voltage .5 to 5 volts max. Keep an eye on your meter to see if ther is any flats spots in the sensor. Meaning no voltage reading. Move to the open position slowly, you should see a steady increase of voltage no jumping around.if there is it needs to be replaced.

Your escape is a 3.0L duratec motor. Is the motor itself overheating or just the pipes? The high idle is often related to a dirty Idle Air Control module or IAC, which is located on the top of the motor near the throttle body. If you clean this, or replace it, after a few days the high idle is often times solved.
SOURCE: 1995 Chev S10 4.3L V6 rough idle and under power
This make/model has a chronic problem with EGR clogging. If you have a dashboard indicator showing "check engine" most likely it is a trouble code indicating and EGR (exhaust gas recirculator) valve problem. Symptoms are rough idle, and surging and stalls.
What happens is sediments from the exaust manifold get sucked up into the valve when it opens, then stick in the valve and keep it from closing. When the valve is open when it should be closed, the engine runs very rough.
I removed my egr and then dislodged the sediment (pea-sized debris) and then re-installed the valve. Three days later, the same "check engine" and same rough idle. I must have did this at least three or four more times.
What I found that gave me a permanent solution was an aftermarket filter gasket that keeps debris from clogging. I don't remember the name of the product, but a search for "EGR filter gasket" may lead you to the product.
Install the gasket between the EGR and the exhaust manifold and you should be good to go. Note: on 1995 and newer models, disconnecting the EGR from the wiring harness (common on R&R) may require the computer to be reprogramed.

Sounds like it could be your Idle Air Control valve (IAC). The IAC does as it sounds and controls the idle in your vehicle. When these go bad, you can either clean them with a throttle body cleaner or replace them. Most people replace them as they are normally not very expensive and relatively easy to replace. The IAC is located on the throttle body which is where the air duct hose ends as it comes out of the air filter box. It is normally held on with a couple screws and just needs to be unplugged and plug the new one in. Please, please let me know if you have any further questions. If you can't find the location of the part let me know. Also if you don't think the IAC is your problem and have addition information that could point to something else, let me know. Here is a picture of what you are looking for:
This is the IAC for the 6 cylinder engine but it is different and more expensive on the 4. Let me know if you have the 4 and need a picture of it. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

If it's not idling and has problems starting, it's probably the IAC motor. It's located on the throttle body. Follow the airfilter box all the way to the engine, where the rubber flex hose attaches. The throttle body should be the first aluminum part you come to. Attached to the side you'll find small little aluminum part with a small wire harness attached. Unplug it, take the IAC motor off and clean inside with carb cleaner. This should fix the problem with the idle.

Could this be fuel/ fuel filter issues?
