How to replace the switch on the lights in the steering wheel of a 2006 chevrolet silverado

Before you start replacing parts ,need a little more information . Maybe able to save you some time an money . Does the horn work when you push the horn button , does the air bag light stay lit in the instrument cluster ? The button lights for the bottons on the steering wheel are lit by the BCM - body control module . Interior Lamps Dimming
The second group includes lamps which may be dimmed. This group may use a combination of vacuum fluorescent (VF) illumination and incandescent lamps.
When the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position, the radio's vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays turn on at maximum brightness. When the park lamps are on, all incandescent back lighting turn on at the dimming level indicated by the I/P dimmer switch. At the same time all vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays dim to match the indicated dimming level. The panel dimmer switch potentiometer is an input to the BCM. When the driver selects a dimming setting by moving the I/P dimming switch potentiometer, all incandescent back lighting lamps are provided with a specific voltage. When the I/P dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, all vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays, as well as all incandescent back lighting respond from minimum intensity to maximum brightness in response to the I/P dimmer switch.
The following switches and components have back lighting when the park lamps are on:
• The instrument panel cluster (IPC)
• Radio, front and rear
• Window and heated seat switches
• Garage door opener switch
• Selectable ride switch
• Roof beacon switch
• Power take off (PTO) switch
• Headlamp leveling switch
• Rear wheel steering mode select switch
• HVAC control assembly
• Headlamp and panel dimmer switch
• Transfer case shift control switch
• PSIR disable switch
• PRNDL lamps
• Traction control switch
• Steering wheel control switches
• Fog lamp switches

Had a leak in front windshield window after it was replaced. After heavy rain this morning, some water was on my steering wheel and some on steering column. Now my SRS light stays on & horn does not...

Depending on the year and make of this car or truck when you turn on the key the system runs a test and if the problem was repaired it will shut light off, if the light remains on then theres a problem. even if you had a scan tool reset the light it will come right back on as soon as the engine is started, this sounds like something got wey and shorted out, the first thing i would check is the fuses and then look around at the bottom of the steering column and check connections for water or rusted terminals, inside the steering wheel is a clock spring that contains wires for horn air bag and other controls if cars has them like cruise or steering wheel radio controls, the part called clock spring is what makes the wheel be able to turn without ripping wires, it like a retractable bunch of wires and sometimes they go bad just from turnning the wheel so often, heres a picture of it, chrysler is famous for problems with this, good day.johnjohn2_97.jpg

Horn does not work on a 1993 cutlass ciera

Try to find the horn and use a test light to try to ground out one or the other contacts. The horn should be energized at all times, as long as the battery is charged.

The horn should sound if you ground out one or the other terminal with a test light. If not, then the horn is bad.

Also, one can check the button at the steering wheel. If one uses a test light to ground out the switch there, the horn should sound.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Without Air Bag
See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8
Disconnect the battery ground cable before removing the steering wheel. When installing a steering wheel, always make sure that the turn signal lever is in the neutral position.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If your vehicle is equipped with controls for the radio on the steering wheel proceed as follows:

  1. Pry out the control button assembly with a thin bladed tool along the top of the edge of the assembly.
  2. Disconnect the steering wheel control.

  1. On vehicles without the radio controls on the steering pad, take a thin-bladed tool and pry the pad off the steering wheel. On wheels with a center cap, pull off the cap.

Fig. Fig. 2: Common steering wheel pad types

  1. After lifting the trim off, pry the horn wires from the back of the pad. On some models gently push down on the horn lead and turn left, the wire and spring will then come out of the canceling cam tower.

Horn, cruise control, and radio controls on steering wheel do not work ?

The clockspring behind the steering wheel is possibly defective or unplugged. It is the one and only component that all of your symptoms have in common.

Airbag light flashing

As long as the light is on the airbag system is disabled.

I would suspect that your clockspring behind the steering wheel is going bad. I would have someone with a scan tool that is able to retrieve trouble codes from the airbag system check it for codes to verify this. If so then steering wheel and steering column trim would have to be removed to access the clockspring to replace it.

2004 ford sport trac - cruise control no longer works

This problem is most times caused by an open circuit in the rotating contact under the steering wheel, this part is called the clock-spring contact, it supplies a connection to the airbag and steering wheel controls like the cruise, horn and radio controls. I would check the fuse as well to cover the bases, it is fuse #9 in the passenger compartment fuse box, it is a 7.5 AMP
