The Mitsubishi Galant has an electric fuel pump so you should ensure that its fuses and relays are working before checking it. You may need to clean your fuel pump or replace it if your gas tank is not empty, but your vehicle has difficulty getting fuel. The Mitsubishi Galant's variety of styles and trim levels can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.

      1. Determine which fuel pump your Mitsubishi Galant will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1969 to 1973 will have a 1.3 L or 1.5 L engine, 1973 to 1975 models have a 1.6 L engine and models made from 1976 to 1983 may have a 1.6 L, 1.85 L, 2.0 L or 2.6 L engine.
      2. Look at later versions of the Mitsubishi Galant. Models made from 1983 to 1991 have 1.6 L, 1.8 L and 2.0 L engines. Models built from 1992 to 1998 may have 1.8 L, 2.0 L, 2.4 L and 2.5 L engines. Models for 1999 to 2003 add an option for a 3.0 L engine. The latest generation debuted in 2004 and may have a 2.4 L, 3.8 L or 3.8 L engine.
      3. Prepare your vehicle for service to the fuel pump. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Take out the rear seat cushion. You will need to pull the seat stopper out and lift up the lower cushion. You can now remove the access cover.
      4. Unplug the fuel pump's electrical connection and disconnect the fuel send and return hose. Remove the retaining cap for the fuel pump with tool MB991480 and remove the fuel pump.
      5. Install the packing material on the fuel tank. Replace it if the packing material is damaged or deformed. Install the new fuel pump and align the marks on the floor pan and fuel pump.
      6. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.

    SOURCE: 2002 mitsubishi galant

    Has it overheated lately?
My wife overheated our Galant and it just stopped working, it cranks but that's it.
I pulled the sparkplugs and found them wrapped in a gewey jelly like substance. Like an oil/antifreeze combo.
I am going to replace the entire motor for $1000 as taking it to the mechanics to theorize and practice may cost more.

SOURCE: my 2000 mitsubishi galant es went dead, motor will turn over but

do you have spark? How do you know if your timing belt is good? sometimes it doesnt break just shed the teeth which could be missing under the crankshaft. The best way to check is to have two people. have one try to start the car and see if the camshaft is actually spinning. The crankshaft will always turn but if the teeth are gone on timing belt this would cause the belt to stay in one position not moving the camshaft. so if you can remove the upper timing belt cover and do this quick inspection with someone that will tell you for sure. if it does look like it is spinning then by hand turn engine very slowly with plug coil wires removed. and make sure teeth are all there. It couldve jumped timing. (valve timing)

SOURCE: i can't find the fuel pump relay in my 2000

there are two relay for the fuel pump, one from the key to the fuel pump the other is called MFI relay. you will only get power to the pump when you are cranking over the engine. the MFI take over when the engine is running.. both are on the driver side of the center console under the kick plate you have too look close to the radio you will see a brass plate with one 10mm nut holding them on....

    Hard starting

Could be a faulty check valve in the fuel pump. The check valve prevents fuel pressure from draining back into the tank.

2003 Galant will fire but will not start fuel pump or filter?

It could really be either. The filter is the cheapest to replace (Usually around $20) and according to Mitsubishi should be replaced every 40,000 miles or so. I would replace the fuel filter any day of the week before going into replacing the pump. Hope this helps you.

Does the 2003 Mitsubishi Galant have a separate filter and fuel pump or do you have to replace both in order to replace one?

the filter is located in the engine bay or under the car. not attached to the fuel pump.
I dont think the dealership will help you with this, however if you purchase your fuel filter from a parts store they can possibly give you the exact location. hope this helps!
