Fuel delivery system most likely. It may be flooding if you need to wait for a restart. Which would mean too much fuel and probably bad fuel injectors or their control system. Fuel pump, fuel filter, It may have a fuel pump and fuel pump relay. Fuel injectors may be a problem or their controlling system.

Why does the fuel pump on 1993 ford ranger with a 4.o engine not shut off when switch is in on position & engine not running. takes ether to start it & then it floods REAL BAD.so what shuts th

You need to check fuel pump relay. Usually located under hood and I believe pass side fender well. That's odd for pump to run all the time unless relay has stuck on or has been jumped to run. (By that I mean someone has wired in run position) the computer usually grounds relay to turn on fuel pump

Fuel pump relay wiring diagram

hot engine or cold or both??????????
and #1 all time question on topic, can you prevent the stall with a fast acting right foot.. A KEY CHECK and FACT !
Is it totally intermittent, and runs perfect other times,,,, gee, just a hint here.....???????? if yes, #2 below is probably ok.

can be lots of things, that cause stalls (over 50), not just the fuel pump.
we check fuel pressure if at spec. then i forget that. (easy huh?)
let me make a list . (works on all gas cars)
  1. lost 12vdc power to EFI system (dash lamps go dead?) loose fuse? dead battery, battery lugs filty, etc.
  2. bad engine compression , can happen hot,
  3. lost spark , ever give it a 60k mile tuneup? test spark using SOP ways and means, google it.
  4. bad fueling (note how its last as you can NOT burn fuel with above bad. period. We learn to read spark plug tips for clues.
  5. bad fueling too much is flooding or starving.
  6. EGR valve stuck open will stall any engine , or near stall.
  7. there are up to 50 causes but the above MACRO , covers most.
ever think to use a scan tool and scan it for errors at the stall.
a scan tool can be had for $9 buck.s
or rent one, or barrow one, many auto stores lend them.
in the hope you will start buying parts like crazy, lacking and FSM
and the reading these tests. in said manual.

Flooding out find fuel pump relay

would be a little easier to say for sure if i knew which engine, but the fuel pump relay should be under the hood. there is a plastic box in there with a lid on it, usually called the underhood power distribution center by gm. think you will find the fuel pump relay in there. it's a metal rectangle that plugs in like a fuse. hope that helps

93 dodge shadow driving along 45-50 mpg, starts to sputter, fuel

did they change the fuel filter at the same time?a bad filter will cause the fuel pump to overwork and can cause premature failure.you may also have a fuel pump relay going bad,it is probably located in a fuse/relay box under the hood.
