Question about 2000 Kia Sportage

Open Question

4x4 not working. The transfer case "pops" and engages from axel for a second then stops. Front axel was completely re done not long ago.

New hubs, cv axels, steering knuckles, drive shaft u-joints. Pop comes from mid car and I think its the transfer case.

SOURCE: 4 wheel driver not working

I had this happen to mine, and it was a cracked vacuum line going from the transfer case to the hub. Took 48 cents and 15 minutes to fix.

SOURCE: need to replace front left cv axel

Best approach is to acquire a repair manual for that vehicle. Pep Boys or similar will likely have one..

no you do not need an alignment after replacing axle. the only thing to look out for is to make sure replacement axle is locked in transmission, just pull on it to be sure. break axle nut loose on ground its easiar that way. then remove tire. have a good day !!

How do i troubleshoot a transfer case problem?

When was the last time the 1995 transfer case was serviced? First change the oil, It is possible for the transfer chain to jump teeth when the tensioner is not adjusted correctly. Do not engage any 4WD functions until further investigation is done. Also disengage front hub locks(free). Never operate 4WD on pavement, Damage to drivetrain and premature tire wear will occur. Buy a Chilton manual for the Jeep for detailed maint. procedures. The transfer case is very expensive

4x4 won't engage

You have a Vacuum Leak that is not allowing the Front Hubs to engage... I do believe that 1996 Dodge has Vacuum hubs on the Differential

What you want to do is engage the system and then kill the engine. This will work with electric hubs if you leave the keyswitch on.

With the front tires off the ground, a locked hub should turn the c-v joint and try to turn the front differential. If the transfer case is locked in 4x4 then the front driveshaft should be locked too. The differential is caught in the middle. It may have spider gears which can break, but if the c-v joint turns something is not connecting inside the front differential.

If the front hubs are Vacuum activated, you should be able to apply Vacuum and do the same test.

What's involved in changing a cv joint in a 2000 Rav 4? I have very good mechanical abilities & have changed cv joints before (about 10 years ago)

Easy enough job really, jack car up, put axel stand under. remove wheel - remove hub nut, remove pinch bolt - prise open the pinch bolt part (sorry cant rem name) pop out the hub from the lower arm. Remove CV join from drive shaft. Usually a tap will pop it out.. sometimes theres a circlip that need removing (models vary). Grease up new CV joint - put grease in new boot, pop boot over drive shaft. put cv join on (replace circlip if provided in kit). join cv to hub - attach CV boot fully. fasten hub nut, replace wheel.

done. might need tracking again or aligning once you do this.

I had this problem a couple years ago. Turned out to just be the cable to the 4x4 had slipped out or something. Les Schwabb actually fixed it for me. Hope yours is that simple.

Front hubs wont engage

There are two parts to the auto-locking hubs. Inner and outer. Both of them have small tabs on each of the 'cams'. Chances are, they are broken off on the outer hub. When you clean them up real good, you can see them. I believe when the axles turn the outer hub, the inner and outer cams push against spring pressure and lock the unit to the wheel hub. These hubs will break when engaged at higher speeds, especially on a dry tar road.

Warn manual hub install 2000 f-250

THE KNOB ON THE DASH ENGAGES THE TRANSFER CASE, WHICH TURN THE AXLES. THE MANUAL HUBS LOCK THE WHEELS TO THE AXLES.

1994 22re 4x4 problem

your transfer case is not working properly, try this trick, shift into 4wd and gently back up the car and go forward and back up again wait for the indicator light to come back again, goodluck, otherwise you need to have those transfer case checked and maintained, have those front hubs checked and maintained too. Its would be better to use your 4WD more often. Try this trick not on a paved road pls.
