How does the right front axle come out of a 2005 2500 4x4? I have removed the wheel, brakes & hub. Is there a cir-clip on the inside of the front axle? Thanks Bob

front wheel bearing is pressed into hub and has retaining clip on rear and then cv axle shaft comes through center and has a nut and keeper pin. Rule of thumb is to replace both front wheel bearings at same time. raise front of vehicle place on jackstands for safety remove front wheels remove brake calipers remove front rotors and cv axles remove steering hub assy from lower ball joint, tie rod end and struts take hub to shop and have bearing pressed out have new bearings pressed in reassemble front wheels in reverse order of disassembly.
Assuming 4wd or AWD.
Remove wheel.
With someone in the car pressing on brakes, remove the center nut (pinion nut). I use impact gun once the retaining clips are off.
Now remove brakes (rotor and all)
Unbolt hubs (good time to replace them if needed).
Press hub off pinion. I use a large steering wheel puller/harmonic balancer puller.
Axle now will slide out of the hole where the hub was.
Consider replacing the ball joints at this time (use OTC ball joint press + the jeep specific adapters there is a slight angle to the inner C's and if you don't have the jeep specific adapters you will spend hours cursing .
Changing the axle (or hubs) is mainly an excercise it getting rusted bolts off. Changing ball joints - with the right tools - is not to bad.
Check with autoparts store for the torque values to tighten everything up.
Obviously check your brakes while you are in there.
first you remove all the lug nuts and the wheel and tire. To get the rotor off you will need to remove the brake caliper. they are held in with 1/4" hex screws. If you don't have an allen wrench you can use a socket extension to removes these. Once unscrewed the calpet simply lifts off the rotor and the rotor is ready to come off. You will need to remove the axle nut and keeper then the rotor slides off towards you and the wheel bearings will come out with the rotor.
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Front wheel
Clip, 2 caliper pins, the anti-rattle spring then remove the 2 brake pads and the 4 anti-squeal shims
To Install:
CAUTION Only replace brake pads on 1 side of the vehicle at a time. Failure to use this procedure could cause the caliper pistons on the opposite side of the vehicle to pop out requiring the reconditioning or replacement of the brake caliper.
Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder.
Install a used brake pad into the caliper and compress the caliper pistons.
Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
Install or connect the following:
Anti-squeal shims to the new brake pads NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads.
2 brake pads
Anti-rattle spring and the 2 caliper pins
Clip
Front wheel
Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.
CAUTION
Brake linings may contain asbestos. Asbestos is a known cancer-causing agent. When working on brakes, remember that the dust which accumulates on the brake parts and/or in the drum may contain asbestos. Always wear a protective face covering, such as a painter's mask, when working on the brakes. NEVER blow the dust from the brakes or drum! There are solvents made for the purpose of cleaning brake parts. Use them!

To install:
Insert the left and right axle shafts into the axle tube.
To install the right axle shaft (with Command-Trac) first be sure that the shift collar is in position on the intermediate shaft and that the axle shaft is fully engaged in the intermediate shaft end.
If equipped with Command-Trac, install the shift motor, making sure that the fork engages with the collar. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
On the left side, install the axle shaft in the housing.
Partially fill the hub cavity of the knuckle with chassis lube and install the hub and splash shield.
Tighten the hub bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
Install the hub washer and nut. Tighten the nut to 175 ft. lbs. (237 Nm). Install the locknut. Install a new cotter pin.
remove the wheel. remove the brake caliper and brake rotor. if the car has abs, unplug the connector and undo the clip from the knuckle. remove the axle nut. tap on the end of the axle with a soft faced hammer until it begins to move back, being careful not to damage the threads on the axle. remove the 3 bolts on the backside of the hub that hold it onto the knuckle. use a hammer with a chisel, or an air hammer if available to free the hub assembly from the knuckle. reverse for install. dont forget to torque the axle nut to spec.
