SOURCE: transmission downshifts erroneously

Sounds like the computer that controls the transmission.....but don't just go buy one because there is a diagnostic route.I just worked on two of those earlier this year, and the computer can drive you crazy.92 is pre OBD 2 or OBD anything, codes are pulled from the car manually.Passenger side interior, front kick panel.Remove the kick panel, locate BLUE colored TWO WIRE connector. It isnt connected to anything.Take a paper clip or wire, bend in a U,insert into connector.Turn the ignition switch on,engine off. This throws the trans computer into self diagnostic mode.Count the number of times...on the dash...the "S" light flashes. This is the code number. Now you look up the code number on a code chart. If there are NO CODES,the "S" light just comes on for 2 seconds when you turn the ignition on,then the "S" light goes back out.Thats normal operation,no codes. If no codes, you are back to square one.Welcome to code diagnostics.Remove paper clip.IF,there are any codes, they must be identified on a code chart,as a diagnostic trouble code for say...the shift solenoids,is a definite solution to this problem.Honda trans's are problematic on solenoids, shift and line pressure. So,check for codes, diagnose any codes and repair them.If no codes,or codes have been repaired, and the same symptom still persists, then it's time to look at the computer,or PCM.The PCM is located either under the carpet on the passenger side front, near the firewall,or under one of the front seats.Remove the PCM,take to a clean bench, and dissasemble.Remove outer cover and look, don't touch, look for a capacitor that may have exploded.I had very similar problems on one....the gear selector indicator would indicate Park and Overdrive....AT THE SAME TIME,when actually in Overdrive, and the car would failsafe to 3rd gear.It was a bad PCM,but did not see an exploded capacitor inside that one.Good Luck...Hondas,gotta love em.

SOURCE: volvo xc90 2004 buzzing in steering wheel, clunck noise under car

that sounds like you are low on power steering fluid ... when the level gets low then the pump starts to ingest air and that produces a buzzing sound when you turn the wheel .....i would add or change the fluid and check for leaks and mechanical loosness in the under car linkages ...you can have that checked at your next oil change .

Testimonial: "Thank you, you were right I took the car in and they said the steering fluid was low. "

Location of my tcm on my Volvo xc90 awd 2.9

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) on a Volvo XC90 AWD 2.9 is located under the driver's side dash, attached to the underside of the steering column. It is mounted behind the steering wheel and can be accessed by removing the lower dashboard panel.

2005 volvo xc90 indicator warning symbols not working and text window not working and no head lights

Disconnect the battery for 15-20 minutes, then reconnect everything for a "hard reset". Next, I would suspect the instrument cluster may have gone bad if this does not make everything power up again. Also test battery voltage should be within the magic 12-13.5v range.

The awd does not engage the back wheels on the 04 xc90 Volvo how ever the "w" does appear on dash

There are quite a few things that can cause this. It should be as simple as a software upgrade to the differential electronic module or as expensive as an angle gear.

I don't know of a safe way to check if the driveshaft is turning without raising the car off the ground, but that's where you'll need to start.

If the driveshaft turns but the rear wheels are not engaging then the codes will need to be pulled and the system diagnosed.

If the driveshaft does not turn then the angle gear or the collar that connects the transmission to the angle gear is stripped

The only thing I could tell you that might actually help right now is... Remove the battery cover in the rear of the vehicle, it's under the load floor. Disconnect the battery cables and leave them off for two minutes. Reconnect them and drive the car. If the AWD engages then a software upgrade may fix it, or there's an intermittent electrical fault in the sensor system.
Volvo has a complimentary (free to the customer) software upgrade available for all cars sine 2001. Some dealers do it, some not so much. Ask for it, most of the software packages I've seen include the updates to the differential electronic module (DEM) if they have anything available anyway.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Gear shift is locked. we can only shift the car

The automatic transmissions on these vehicles are known to die early in the life of the car and Volvo is well aware that the vehicle has a dud auto transmission. The symptoms you have mentioned are an indication that the transmission has had it. It's basically just running in limp mode now.

You don't say what mileage this vehicle has clocked up but even low mileage vehicles have had to have the entire transmission replaced due to failures like yours. You also, no doubt, have a transmission alert showing on the dash.

The bad news is that a replacement automatic transmission will now be necessary and this will be costly. Even then, with these cars, you could experience another transmission failure after just another 30000 miles or so of driving.
