Always disengage when towing heavy loads. Always leave on for the best gas milage at normal freeway driving conditions. City driving does'nt matter much, either way

If the parts are functioning correctly as you say which sounds like they do you must have a weak computer that needs replacing instead. If a short was there no overdrive will work at all times

There is a check valve in the transmission cooling lines on these trucks. This valve is in the line near the radiator on the passenger side. This valve can get stuck and cause the Trans to overheat due to no trans cooler flow. When these Transmission get hot overdrive goes out. Located this valve take the line apart near it and use a small screwdriver and try to free it up. It is spring loaded and should push in and spring out easily. If you can't you must replace it. Don't drive it like that or you could ruin the transmission
