Help. We don't know how to open the petrol tank on this new old beast! Anyone here know? It's a 1988 Toyota Corolla 4 wheel drive station wagon and we need to put some petrol in <3
There should be a latch to the left of the drivers seat to pull up. It is cable opened. If the cable is broken. they put another cable pull in the trunk, drivers side. But not sure what year they started doing this. There should be a latch to the left of the drivers seat to pull up. It is cable opened. I don't know if your fuel injected or carb? If your fuel injected, probably electric fuel pump, in the gas tank. If not fuel injected, probably a mechanical fuel pump, under the hood, note picture.
There is likely an issue with the vent control side of the EVAP system. I am also willing to bet the check engine light has been on since this problem started? This is a complicated system and i would recommend having a shop (either the dealer or an independent shop that you have experience with) take a look at this.

Some early models and all turbocharged or fuel injected cars are
equipped with an electric fuel pump. On the early models the fuel pump
is mounted in the trunk on sedans and hardtops and in the left rear
wheel housing on station wagons. On the turbocharged Colt and fuel
injected Vista, the fuel pump is in the gas tank. On the Conquest, it is
on the frame rail, behind the left rear wheel, and on later models is
located on the fuel tank.

On late Conquest models, the fuel pump is tank mounted. It is
necessary to remove the fuel tank for fuel pump service. Refer to the
Colt/Vista procedure. Hope helped.
