for Ford keys (1996 -early 1998 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)
If you want to initiate a new master key....
1. Insert new key into ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen minutes.
2. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder OFF and then back to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.
3. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back ON (RUN) position. The dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.
4. After the security light stops flashing the third time, the new key has been programmed into the vehicles computer and will operate the car. It has replaced ALL the previous electronic key codes and is the ONLY key programmed into the vehicles computer. If you want to add a key....
1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.
3. Remove the existing key and, within 15 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to ON (RUN).
4. The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate success in programming the key into the vehicle.
5. Don't attempt to start the vehicle with any key for at least 1 minute.
<HR>On-Board Programming Method "C"
for Ford keys (Later 1998-newer Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)
If you want to initiate a new master key....
1. This requires that the vehicle be connected to special dealer equipment. There are two ten minute delays involved while this device erases all existing key programming and sets up the vehicle computer to accept new key codes. Two new keys should be ready because the system requires a minimum of two keys in the program. After the first two keys are programmed, additional keys can be entered individually by following the instructions for adding duplicate keys (below).
If you want to add a key....
**You must have two original keys to perform this procedure. If you only have one key, you WILL have to take it to the dealer to get it programmed**
1. Insert and existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (RUN) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay on for at least ONE SECOND.
3. Remove the existing key and, within TEN seconds, insert a second working key and turn it to ON (RUN) and the back OFF. Ignition must be in ON for at least ONE second, but no more than TEN seconds. Remove the key.
4. Insert the new key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it the ON position for at least ONE secondand turn back to OFF.
5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.
6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5
As a precautionary measure for all of the above procedures, you should wait at least one minute after you have performed this until you start your vehicle.
Takes the master key to get it started again. The security gives you 3 tries to get the vehicle started, after the third time, it kills the starter. 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Note: You must have two valid keys to add a new key to the system.
1. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the
ON/RUN position for at least three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds.
Then, Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the first key.
2. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to
the ON/RUN position within 15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound.
In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will begin to flash. Turn the ignition switch
to the LOCK position and remove the second key.
3. Insert the new key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the
ON/RUN position.within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will
sound. In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will stop flashing. To indicate that
programming is complete, the Vehicle Security Light will turn on again for
seconds and then turn off.
The new key is now programmed. The Remote Keyless Entry transmitter will
also be programmed during this procedure.
Repeat this procedure to program up to eight keys.
I have had a similar incident with my Saturn LS, DTC1632. The key was sloppy in ignition, which I ultimately think created the Security light from coming on and preventing me from starting the car on occasion. After waiting 15 minutes the car would usually start. Sometimes the security light would flash, but after several successful starts, the flashing light would reset. OK, The root of the issue most likely is with the ignition key cylinder. I fixed my security issue by replacing the key cylinder. Usually major auto parts stores have them for around $50.00. If you look here or on the most popular video sights you can find instruction on how to preplace. It is rather simple, but takes a little time to remove and install the key switch. Plan on at least 4 hours to do this. It is a rather inexpensive solution to do it yourself rather then taking it to a dealer or shop to have done. You will need a 7mm 1/4" drive socket and a T15 screwdriver to remove the cowl cover under the steering wheel, also a small flat tip screwdriver to remove the plastic key cover. You also will need a large paper clip to insert in the key cylinder hole to release the key cylinder from the housing. Key must be in the run position, you may have to turn the key back and forth slightly to depress the spring loaded retainer which holds the key in the housing. ALSO - Disconnect the Battery FIRST OF ALL. Don't want any air bags going off. Reverse process to reinstall key cylinder, although you do not have to depress the spring loaded retaining feature, just push the key cylinder in place. Again it will have to be in the run position when installing. Best of luck.
The security light is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM. (Theft Deterrent Module) The TDM is what tells your computer that the correct key is being used and that it is "OK" to allow the vehicle to start and run. These 3 parts must be in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending important signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, (normally due to a failing/broken part) the car goes into antitheft mode. The car misinterperates this and thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is NOT getting that signal from YOUR specific key. There is where the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. So basically, if that light is on, your system has some sort of failing part. This can start as an intermittent "no start", to your vehicle not running for days at a time, to the vehicle NEVER starting again. The problem is electrical and computer based, so don't count on an easy reset button, or the problem fixing itself. The hard part is isolating which part is the problem. You can spend a thousand dollars through a mechanic very easily. I have had great luck with bypassing the entire system. This way the problem will never return. It actually CAN'T ever return because it is eliminated. This can also be done yourself at a much cheaper cost. Read through this link very carefully. You'll find alot of information and pictures, along with ways to help you fix this. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/
Normally, you would insert the key in the drivers door, turn left, then right to disarm and reset it. If yours is malfunctioning, you can disable it for good by doing the following:
The FACTORY ALARM DISARM WIRE IS
light green with a negative polarity at the harness coming out of the door in the driver's side kick panel.
Once Located, splice into this wire with a similar guage wire, and put it to a solid chassis ground. This terminates the OEM alarm functions entirely.
OR: Bulb Stays Illuminated and Engine Does Not
Start. If the "SECURITY" indicator stays illuminated while and after
attempting to start the engine and the engine does not crank or start,
this indicates that the PASS-Key II module has sensed an improper key
value and has disabled the engine and set the disable timer. This
specifically does not mean that the key sense circuit is open or
shorted to chassis ground, refer to "Bulb Flashes and Engine Does Not
Start." Remove the key from the ignition
and verify that is the correct key code for the vehicle. The key code
may be checked using J 35628-A and comparing the key code to that of
other keys for the vehicle. After waiting approximately 3 minutes for
the disable time to expire and the "SECURITY" indicator to go out, try
to start the engine with a known good key with the proper key code.
Bulb Flashes and Engine Does Not Start. If the "SECURITY" indicator
flashes once per second and the engine does not start, this indicates
that the PASS-Key II module sensed an open, a short or otherwise
invalid (value matched none of the available 15 key codes) input from
the ignition key resistor input. The PASS-Key II module does not start
the disable timer during this operation mode. This operation mode could
also be caused by a malfunctioning power or ground circuits.
OR:
There is 2 more ways to fix the problem:
1) replace
key cylinder (very difficult)
2) look for 2 small white wires
encased in an orange cover at the bottom of the steering column at the
big steering column connector. Cut the two small white wires and
connect a resistor of the same resistance of your key chip onto the two
white wires leading into the connector. Problem solved!
ALot of times, the security lock out goes bad in the locking cylinder and is usually covered by warranty even after the cars warranty goes out.
This issue was common with 98 hinda accords, the locking cyclinder would sudenly not recognize the key, kill the engine while driving, and not start. This was causing accidents and frustrated drivers who could no longer drive there car.
I would take it to a dealer and find out if its covered, also google it as it may be a known issue or recalled part.
You would know for sure if this is the issue as in most cars, the green or whatever color, Key light will flash when you put the key in, indicating it doesnt recognize the key.
Usually on the passat, if the immobiliser is on, there is a yellow key symbol flashing on the clocks as you try and start it. Do the doors unlock with the remote key? If no flashing light and the key fob working, i would be looking at possibly starter relay. This is either located under the fuse box or under a plastic cover near the windscreen under the bonnet.
