On AM radio, there is often a sound, like a hammer hitting a 55 gal. drum interrupting the program. Does not do it on portable radio carried in the car.

The sound is random but comes in groups.

All stations AM?

is the engine running?

for get the portable, some have vastly better a/m radios than any car has. in fact many cars radios a/m OR of horrid quality.

i can tell you why but its boring. (AGC, read up on that)

did you try the radio in car, parked say across town.?

did you try all stations

are you like 1 block away from an AM radio station, overloading yours.

AM radios are basically noise making radios., that is why FM was invented to stop that noise, (i cant hear it so.........?????)

are you listening to far away stations, this is normal

in fact you might hear 2 stations on same channel (freq)

and they will beat against each other.

on case of is in S.Calif where your station is clobbered by high power mexican stations 50,000 watts. strong.

and worse a night, does it get better in the day?

here is my advice, many AM stations have a rebroadcast on FM.

go there and listen. (use SAT radio?)

AM radio is subject to vast sources of noise.

ignition noise., high voltage power transmission line noise.

machinery noises, (electric)

or even illegal transmitters in your hood.

many new cars the AM radio is junk, they use this very cheap

chip inside that does this very poorly, but allows them to say

it has AM. ( for $1 cost)

the FM side is 10x better, or more. move up to FM like we all did back in 1967. (i used to build and sell converters back then)

answering for , all other modes work perfect, but AM radio..

How do I break rear brake drum loose

un do the adjustment . remove any retaining screws in the face of the drum. Use a hammer and hit between the wheel studs. hit the drum back onto the axle flange If the brakes have been adjusted off then the drum will spring loose.
tip

Rear drums stuck

When servicing vehicle with rear drum breaks it is very important to remember that you need to retract the shoes away from the drums

You will find an inspection plug in the rear of the backing plate

depending on the vehicle you will then have to turn either a start adjuster or compress a spring

even when the shoes are retracted you may still find it difficult to remove the drums due to rust

to help, use a large brass hammer and hit ONLY the flat surface of the drum being very careful NOT to hit the lug studs

you'll hear a very different sound when you finally break the drums free

Rear brake drum is sticking how do you remove brake drum?

Remove wheel and make sure parking brake is off. Pull on drum. If it won't move take a big hammer and hit the sholder of the drum They will get rust on them and may stick. A quick jar with a hammer usually helps with this. http://www.ehow.com/video_2327529_remove-tires-brake-drum.html

Can't get drum off

once tire is off get a large hammer (2 - 3 ) pound and hit drum several times on the face of drum and along the outer area to brake it free, most times the center of drum rusts to axle shaft causing it to stick. dont be afraid to hit the bastard !! and then use larger screwdriver and install behind the drum between the back plate and pry off while hitting opposite side from the back with hammer. I recommend putting on lug nut just enough to cover the threads on lugs so you do not accidently hit them with hammer. and yes you will !! then remove nuts upon drum removal

Cant get them off the van. is there a snap-ring? rear brake drums

sometimes there a clip over the stud were the lug nut goes you would see it once the wheel is off, try hitting drum with a hammer in front to break free, if drum is loose but wont come all the way off then you will have to unadjust the brake adjuster ,its done through a window on the rear of the backing plate ( backside of were the drum is,) hope this helps.

Rear drums dont come of

usually on rear drum brakes you have to give them a good hit with a 3lb sledge hammer and rotate the drum as you hit it and it will loosen up after a full rotation or two. You actually have to hit it pretty good though.

Rear Brake drums?

Start loosening the adjusters, blow out the dust with compressed air, do not breathe the dust as it is toxic. If it does not come out you will need to hammer carefully around the rim. If it still does not come out use a ball ping hammer, and hit the center of the drum being extremely careful not to hit the studs or you will damage it.
An alternative way to do this is hitting the drum in the center avoiding the studs and making sure you are hitting the drum and not the axle. Usually you hit it a couple of times with a hammer and the drum comes off. If you do not do it the right way you may damage brakes, studs and axle.
