If it wont crank over the battery might be to weak to start the car but just have enoughf juice to run the electronics in the car. Or the starter died. 1st charge the battery up and see if that works. 2nd if the fully charged battery dosent solve the problem then replace the starter.
Chev Cavalier has had problems with the crank position sensor, mounted on the bell housing, where it picks up the crank position. Check it with a meter to see if it is OK, else the fuel injection system could be clogged (fuel filter is the main culprit).
- Switch on the head lamps for 5 minutes.
- Keeping the head lamps ON, start the engine. If the lights die,
- Check the battery terminals.
- Check battery state of charge.
- Charging system. If the lights still glow sharply,
- Check fuses and relays in under the hood fuse and relay box junction.
- Battery to starter motor cable.
- Battery to engine ground and chassis ground cable.
- Solenoid on starter motor.
- Starter motor.
- Wiring.
-Ignition switch.
Hey all. I've had my 2003 in twice for the Crankshaft position sensor. In Feb 08 it fixed everything. My car wouldn't start when it had been running for a while. I'd pull into a gas station, then go to start it again and it would just turn over. Same thing just happened in July 2010. They replaced the crankshaft position sensor again, but now it's still doing the same thing. If I let the car sit for 20-25 minutes, it will start and run just fine. However, this time around the check engine light is on and it has never come on. I'm open to any suggestions as to what to try next. What is the PCM exactly?
Are you saying the car turns over (cranks) but it does not start? Or, the car is Not turning over?
If it is cranking over but not starting, and it ran fine before sitting for the year, it may be water/moisture in the gas. Try some dry gas, and/or Carb-fuel injection cleaner in your gas tank.
If you crank the engine with the headlights on and the lights do not go dim there is no current going to the starter. This could be;
A worn ignition switch, usually caused by a heavy bunch of keys swinging on the switch for years. Try and crank the engine whilst wiggling the key in the switch. If it cranks, that is your problem.
The starter solenoid might be dead, so it won't allow the starter to crank.
