I'm removing the harmonic balancer off a 3800 series two engine. I have to replace a crankshaft pos. Sensor. Now I've used a pulley remover and it won't pop off. Any suggestions to remove it without destroying it?
Are you using a gear puller or an actual harmonic bal. puller? You can use air tools(carefully), or to hold the balancer/pulley still, use a chain wrench with an old belt wrapped around to prevent damage. I would not recommend a 2 or 3 jaw type gear puller.
I am. But I'm having the issue of popping the balancer off. I just need to know. Could I use a rubber mallet on it
You could beat on it with a mallet, I doubt it will help. You just need to get the initial "pop" to free it, and then it should come off slowly but surely. Use of penetrating oil will help.
I'll try some pb blaster. But my only issue is the pulley remover goes so far it locks into the crankshaft well. I am still unsure why but the compression bolt on the set will go in. The yokes completely adjusted. Its just that it keeps going to the point where the whole harmonic balancer moves. There is no tension or push from it. But all other gm 3800 motors don't have this problem with the remover. Do you know why?
Are you running out of threads on the drive screw/bolt? Or is just the outer part of the balancer coming off?
I'm running out of thread to keep ratcheting it in to the yoke. It uses all the thread but it's like I need a longer bolt or something with a different head. But the don't sell any of those unless I buy a jaw puller. It might work. But I don't want to get it off an me not have a harmonic balancer because of damage. I was also worried that there might be something else wrong. No videos on pressed harmonic balancers never have the bolt go all the way in.
But yea I'm running out of thread.
If I think what you're saying, back off the drive screw and install the balancer bolt but not all the way. Now the drive screw will be pressing on the crank bolt head, it should give you that extra depth you need.
I'm definitely gonna try tomorrow. I hope this works. Do you know by any chance where I could get a longer drive bolt for later endeavors?
An industrial hardware store perhaps. Finding the right thread pitch might be hard. If you want to get creative, find a bolt with the same pitch and size, cut off the head and join it to your existing drive bolt with a threaded sleeve. Good Luck.
Thanks yo
