Why won't my car start?

Cables are clean, battery is new. Replaced starter relay. Does not even click when key is turned. Also, there is a rapid clicking noice coming from under the hood when I use my remote to unlock the doors. Goes away after 2-3 minutes.

Was thinking about what all you told me, and im almost positive that car has a sidepost battery, I know you said the cables are tight, but there was a problem with the sidepost cables, so humor me if you will, pop the hood and grab the positive cabe about an inch or two below where the cable is connected to the battery and try and pull the cable upwards then try and push downwards. Dont pull with great force but pull with a few pounds of pressure..then do the same to the negative cable. I have a suspicion the positive cable is going to move..if it does let me know, and I will tell you how to correct it.. If neither moves I will suggest what I would check next, when I thought abt it havn the side post battery, I remembered the design flaw and have fixed at least 150 that had new batteries put in and wouldnt start..every one you could move the positive battery cable..will try to check on here today andvsee if you reply

On another note, sometimes I have heard the clicking when the car is just sitting there and the remote hasn't been used or even touched.

    No I can't

This whole thing is really odd because I had been running errands the day before and it was operating flawlessly. I got ready to leave for work the next morning and it wouldn't start

Also, when you get home try turning the switch to crank while bumping steering column with your hand near as possible to switch.

There could be several things causing the problem, can you tell me what the engine size is, and if the car has an alarm system which I am suspecting it does, if so is it a factory alarm or an aftermarket. Prior to this, where you experiencing any other problems with the vehicle? When you put they keys in to crank do your lights or radio work, power windows work? and last is that what prompted the replacement of the starter relay, and battery? I would like to help you get this fixed, so if you can leave a comment with that information I will do my best to help get your car back up and running! jason

3.5 liter V6. Only has stock GM vehicle security system. Prior to this, there was a rapid clicking sound coming from under the hood when the doors are unlocked using the remote.

I changed the battery when I couldn't get the car started as the dealership had previously advised me that the battery was getting weak when I had had some special warranty extension work done. I replaced the starter relay due to a post I saw online on a Chevy owners forum.

Got a bit ahead of myself. Sorry. The lights do go off when the key is turned. Otherwise, the lights appear normal when key is moved from off position.

1998 ford mustang no start just a single click

If the starter is clicking when you turn the key that means it is getting power. It could possibly be a bad new starter but before taking it out and testing check your battery and ground connections. Make sure they are clean by using some sand paper. There is also a ground wire that hooks to engine make sure it is hooked up and not corroded. Even though you bought a new battery make sure it is fully charged. Remember to remove the ground from battery before taking any positive wires off. Hope this helps.

My Volkswagen golf won't start tried jumping it and the lights turn on but even then doesn't start but when ever I turn the key over I hear a rapid clicking sound now my guess was a starter but when we...

I suspect you have a loose or poor connection of the battery cable or ground connection or bad cables. The rapid clicking is the starter solenoid, and it clicks because it is not getting enough current from the battery to energize and turn the starter. Make certain the battery is good, and charged, clean and tighten the battery terminals, check the cables, check the connection at ground and at the starter. I hope this helps steer you to the solution.

89 Ford F-350 won't start

Check all cable connections for corrosion and clean everything you have connections from the battery to the starter relay the actual cables to the starter and also check the starters ground strap at the nose of it if it's frayed or broken you found it this is a contact problem and clean and tighten everything do not use wire brushes 4/0 that's 0000 steel wool =liquid wrench=pb blaster will all help the wire brush rips apart the terminals and battery post causing loose connections they must be tight no air gap good luck stephen

Started truck and just got a rapid clicking noise

That indicates a poor connection, a bad battery cable, or bad ground. Check for all three. Check engine ground, engine to frame ground, and battery ground. Clean and tighten battery connections, starter connections. Check your cables.

Car won't start. New battery installed recently. Only clicks when trying to start.

one single click any time you turn the key usually indicates a bad solenoid on the starter. A new starter will typical get you going.

A series of rapid clicks when you try to start usually indicates a weak battery. There could also be a bad connection at the terminals on the battery or even a poor connection at the starter.

If you get a single click and everything goes dead for a couple of seconds than you definitely have a bad connection at the battery.

Let me know what you find or if you have any questions.

2004 ion won't start. Lights work. When I turn key don't get series of clicks, get one snap.

That symptom usually means the solenoid on the starter is bad and no longer is completing the circuit to engage the starter. A new starter will likely solve that issue. A series of rapid clicks would indicate a week battery. You can try repeatedly turning the key to the start position rapidly, sometimes the starter wil start working. You can also try tapping the starter while somebody holds the key in the start position, if the starter engages place it.

My darango won't start, replaced that alternator and relays. starter is still good. but it won't even click over.

this could be as simple as a bad battery have you tryed to jump start it? if you try and that dosent work make sure you have power going to the starter with jumper cables on the battery. it should at the very least make a clicking sound while trying to start it check the battery posts also make sure they are clean and if it does click give it a minute and try starting it again.[ dont take the cables off the battery while waiting] the fact the starter doesent even click when you try to start it tells me no power to it or bad starter remember just because its new dosent mean it works i cant tell you how many times i have put somethig on a car and had to take it back off because it didnt work from the boxx new. and make sure the starter wires are tight and clean. if no clicking and you have power to starter then starter is bad.. i hope this helps..

93 buick lesabre 3.8 liter starter replaced, new one just clicks

Given the steps you have taken, only one of two things this can be is a resistive connection between the battery and the starter solenoid terminal. Or the battery itself has a bad internal connection. Bear in mind: you cannot crank the engine through the average set of jumper cables unless the battery in the dead vehicle will hold and deliver a good charge. Jumper cables are not really intended to start the car, they are for boosting the good, but low battery in the car being jumped.
