Hard to get my car in first or second gear, and reverse crunches, even when driving for a while it's really hard to change gears, what could be the problem ?

It had all break cables replaced a few months ago, never had problems with gears before that,I've noticed a small leak on the road where it's parked, not sure where that's coming from or if that has anything to do with it.

Does your car have a hydraulic clutch or cable operated clutch

It's cable operated,it's a fiat seicento sporting 1.1 y reg, although she's an old car the milage is very low,I've had her 8 years. The same thing happened a few months ago, couldn't get it in gear all day, then the next day drove as usual !!!!!. The cable has been adjusted to the max.

Most likely your clutch isn't fully disengaging. Knowing what car you have would help, but my guess is it has a hydraulic clutch that is low on fluid. If the clutch pedal feels a bit soft/mushy and the clutch engages with the pedal just off the bottom this is likely the issue so check the fluid. If it's low top it off and pump the pedal several times, it should slowly get tighter and work better, next find and repair the leak. If the clutch pedal is hard to press then the clutch pressure plate has likely failed and a replacement is in order.

The pressure plate is probably bad or maybe the friction lining has separated and is dragging. Either would involve getting to the clutch to repair it. It will damage the transmission to drive it like this.

If it has a hydraulic clutch ,the problem is a failing clutch slave cylinder not holding pressure
the leak is probably from the slave cylinder
the indications are that the clutch pressure plate is not properly clearing the clutch plate and the drag is causing the problems

  • Bill Boyd Oct 14, 2015

your last comment points directly to the problem
cable adjusted to the max indicates that the cable has stretched or is breaking up and jamming in the outer case
I suspect that if you replace the clutch cable ,that the problem will be gone

Gearbox - jammed

I'd start by looking at the clutch hydraulic circuit. "...could not put gear into 1st or reverse" suggests that the change cables on the transmission may be failing. And just in case, make sure there's nothing in the cabin that's jamming the gear change lever.

After driving my e series mazda for about a hour the gears become tight and hard to engage

You might need to have some sort of lubricant put into it i dont know the name of it but if you go into a car parts shop they will tell you or try spraying some WD40 into the area.

My son has a '91 Pulsar, 5 door hatch. When he changes into reverse, the gear "grates", we beleive the clutch needs to be adjusted, is this correct? (he has no bother with any other gear...

When the engine is idling and the gear box selector is in Neutral all the internals of the gearbox are rotating. Pushing in the Clutch disconnects the drive from the engine to the gearbox but it takes a few seconds for the gears in the box to cease rotating. All the forward gears have synchromesh so there will be no crunching noise ifa forward gear is selected immediately the clutch is pushed in before allowing the gears to stop spinning. On the other hand Reverse has No synchros and therefore selecting reverse before waiting a few seconds for the gears to stop spinning will produce the crunching noise you have described.
So it pays to wait a second or two after pushing in clutch before Reverse is selected to minimise the crunch and if the clutch appears to be working correctly in normal driving ,then no adjustment is necessary.

The gears crunch when changing up or down, also in reverse. Sometimes I have to use force to get it into gear properly. Would I need a new gearbox? Or could the problem be clutch related?

needs a new clutch ,its grabbing and not clearing properly ,do not use force to change gear as these vehicle dont like it the syncros break ,stop engine put in gear clutch down then start engine Cannot really answer the wear in the gearbox question without a drive though but from what you descibe i would say clutch but it could the syncros but not on all gears ,normally second goes then thrid and fourth then finally first .best bet is to get a local mechanic to have a drive and then post what he says on here by answering my reply then i will get it .

Driving up hills with my nissan pulsar

It does sound like a gear box issue. 1st and reverse do share some hardware inside. Have a good transmission repair person take a listen to it if you can.

Gear locks when i park on even a slight incline

ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!

Gear change is hard and crunching

Your clutch is most likely worn out, u are over traveling the clutch and causing the hard shift. This is not a fluid problem unless the clutch has allot of free play or goes to the floor..
