Has no distributor - electronic ignition !
The electronic ignition system does not use the conventional distributor and coil. The ignition system consists of the following components/circuits:

use a highr grade petrol ,this vehicle was not designed for unleaded and as such has no cat so maybe a lead additive (europe) if it does have a cat then the timing needs retarding a bit to 6? as this age will have a distributor .

Pinging or spark knock, if that's what you're hearing, is caused by ignition timing that is too far advanced. Being too far advanced causes the fuel mixture to explode rather than burn smoothly, and it can destroy the pistons. If the vehicle has a distributor, which I believe was still in use in 84, you can ****** the timing just until the pinging goes away.
