Grinding Noise seems to be coming from the front end of the car when you put it in all gears except neutral and park

SOURCE: Transmission???

It's hard to say for sure what the problem is, but there are a few things to consider. One, you may have a bad TCU (transmission control unit) - a friend has this issue on an Audi A4. You move the gear selector to put the car in gear, but the TCU isn't responding right and isn't doing what you tell it to do.

Another idea is that your transmission fluid is low or bad, or the filter is clogged. That's a fairly inexpensive and easy thing to take care of, and might not be a bad idea anyhow, seeing as how the car is just under 9 model years old.

A third possibility is that the sensors under the console where the shifter is mounted are bad, and aren't sensing when you move the gear selector. I'm not sure how to diagnose that other than to install new ones (or ones out of a salvaged car), but contact Nissan to see if their OBD2 diagnostics include chassis and powertrain fault scanning - if they do, they should be able to detect a code in the system that will point toward a faulty component.

SOURCE: 1991 Caprice No reverse. Moves in neutral. All forward gears OK.

This is Ron out of Vero Beach Florida. I have been doing trannys for years. The problem you described is caused (more than likely) by a seized clutch pack. Depending on the trans, and your car should be RWD with a 700r4 tranny, there are several sets of clutch packs and at least one band. Automatic transmissions rely on fluid pressure to "engage" the correct set of clutch discs, at the right time , to engage and change gears. I have seen in the past, where a customer parks his car for the evening and the next morning, no move. What happened?? More than likely, a clutch pack was on it\'s way out but cause the car was hot the plates were free, but after cooling, they can weld themselves together and actually "lock-up". In the morning you know the end result. Your tip on "moves in Nuetral" is the give away. Ron

How can tell which lower motor mount is bad on my 2004 chevy impala 3.4 liter ? Does a bad motor mount make the engine have grinding noises after running the car?

With the park brake on, start the engine with the hood open so you can see it through the windshield. Put it in reverse and give it some gas, if the engine moves up, you have a broken mount. Do the same in drive. If the motor moves up then the mount on the side of the engine that moved up is broken. If these tests don't show a broken mount then your grinding noise is coming from elsewhere.

Grinding noise from passanger side when in reverse

Have the constant velocity joints looked at. Make sure there is enough grease in them and the rubber boots haven't been torn. Also have the engine mounts looked at. Worn rubber parts in the mounts can make that knocking sound when you go into reverse.

Honda accord 1993, I have a problem when I get up to normal speed 50mph and let off of the gas I have a grinding noise. If I slow down by not letting off the gas by holding the brake on,or put it in...

I'll bet it maks the same noise backing up too the motormounts are loose enough to allow the fan belt drive to run into something. with the hood open and someone driveing the car have them put the car in gear and watch the motor move around ( it should move around a little) as they put the car in reverse and hold the brake so the car doesn't move lean or the gas and you should see where it's hitting and make the repairs or reconnect something that's falling off like the raditor fans, the hoses for the air conditioner or other belt drive conponants. If this doesn't find anything look at the drive axels and see if their covers and shields are all in place and not runnininto something

Sound like a transmission problem or at the very least a differential problem. The only way to know for sure is to have it looked at by a pro.

Possible Tranny problem...

I am sorry to have to tell you this but it sounds to me like your transmission is shot and will need a rebuild. If you can get it to a transmission shop they will tell you 100% what wrong with it. .
