How do i get the rear hatch indicator light to go off

Short circuit near the rear hatch.

posibly sensor bad, do you have a symbol for rear hatch light on in your dash? if the sensor light in dash is on and the inside hatch light is on while hatch is shut and locked, its most likely a sensor gone out, if the light is on with no dash indicators on, then its most likely the light itself is shorted or has a broken switch

The switch on the latch is more then likely stuck. If you can see it spray it with some electrical cleaner and open and shut the hatch a few times.

on a 1997-2002 caldina G, GT, GTT..

One is the rear demister (front demister is in the center console with the heater). But it could also be the windscreen cleaner pump, if you mean on the stalk. (up, front window, down, reap window).

One is the fog lamps if fitted

The last is an inverter buit into the car so you can run 100Volt domestic devices (like laptops/shavers and stuff). I think the japanese have 100 volt domestic power. You'll find the *** power socket on the back of the centre console under a little hatch, easiest to see from the back seat. Mostly you want it turned off.

Possible that the wiring harness to the rear is having a short from the hatch door switch to the brake light assembly . It can also be a wrong connections if there was some work done on this area that needed the harness to be rewired. So check this out, remove and reconnect.
use a multimeter to check the drain of the battery to confirm the short when the line is detached.

wires must have been trapped,shorted when engine was removed, check loom for damage

It was a fuse on side of dash marked # 2 fuse for horn and back hatch just fixed in my 1996 gmc jimmy...thanks

You need to tighten the lock mech on the boot lid. this will close the boot just enough more to turn the light on. It's no biggy, you might need a star driver depending on bolt head. move it into the boot lid approx 4mm to start. then 1mm until 10mm. if no joy then it may be the sensor.

the switch to detect hatch close is not being pressed down ..check at the striker there is a switch there confirm it is is working by pressing down on it with your finger and watching the light on the instrument panel

it sounds like the transponder chip in your key needs reprograming "dose any lights on the dash come on or flash"
