So, my girlfriend bought a used car from a friend. She also purchased all of the problems that went along with it; sometimes, mid-turn, the turn signals would quit working, or the fact that there are NO dash lights, or the occasional dying when shifting. I played with the blinker fuses and relays and fixed the turn signal issue, we remedied the dash lights with some aftermarket peel-n-stick cigarette lighter lights, but the problem that eludes me is this stalling issue. Sometimes, when she shifts out of park or into drive from reverse automatic shifting, by the way, the RPMs drop so low that the car stalls out. I know that a slight drop is normal, but not to the point that the car dies. Then, she tries to start it again, and sometimes she has to get a jump, but I digress. A while back, she started using gas treatment about every 1,000 miles and that helped a good deal, but not anymore. This stalling issue does not happen all the time, just at the most inopportune times. I've had the car read with a scanner, but the issues it pulls up are like the gas cap or stuff like that. Please help!
I would look at the alternator. With everything that is going wrong it all comes down to charge. It would seem that the alternator is only working part time as it is on its way out. I am guessing that as you are driving it is only charging the battery sometimes and other times it is not charging the battery causing your issues. The alternator can be checked at any parts store for free without taking it out.

it sounds like a common toyota problem........."idle air control motor", the part is very easy too change, and if your looking to save money.try a junk yard , it is a commonly used part and theyll have it much cheaper than parts stores....you can try to unplug the idle motor and see if the car runs (not better, but more even RPMS)...it the idle is even and not up and down,,,, it is for sure a bad idle motor,,, let me know, ill guide ya through the testing if needed..........marty
SOURCE: reverse doesn't work. drive slips
Sounds like a transmission problem. It could be just electrical, but sounds like it may be partially internal with the reverse problem you are having. You need to take it to a trans shop, or the dealer.
SOURCE: 02 Sienna, idling issue, new battery, alternator tested good
check for vacume leaks listen for a hissing sound if you here one but cant pin point it you can use a spray bottle of gas of can of ether both very flamable so be gentle and spray around the sound when the engine revs up theres your leak thats where i would start
