The normal timing mark is on the harmonic balancer and the timing plate at the front of the engine. If you are talking about the cam then it is on the pulley and the head.

Setting timing marks to get vehicle to start after engine overhaul

Timing marks setting Corolla 4A-FE.
Align the notch on the crankshaft pulley with the "0" mark on the timing belt lower cover.

With the crankshaft pulley being aligned with the 0 mark on the timing belt cover, the hole on the camshaft sprocket should exactly be in front of the notch of camshaft bracket.

Ichanged the head on my 91 geo storm 1.6 dohc and now it won't start

Double check crankshaft timing mark, on your lower timing cover has some timing marks - crankshaft should be on the 0 mark. Camshaft timing marks--intake camshaft mark set at 3 o'clock and exhaust camshaft mark set a 9 o'clock. These timing marks are critical for motor to run and start correctly. These timings marks can move while trying to install the timing belt. After, you confirm or reset timing and belt, you can confirm timing is correct by rotating the crankshaft twice. Your timing marks should be on right on timing marks discussed at the top of the page. If timing marks are off, start over with timing process.

  5. If timing chain copper links are not visible, mark 2 links on one end and 1 link on the other end to be used as timing marks.
  6. Install right and left timing chain guides. Tighten bolts to 89 in-lbs (10 Nm).
  7. Rotate the left camshaft until the timing mark is at the 12 o'clock position.
  8. Rotate the right camshaft until the timing mark is at the 11 o'clock position.
  9. Position the crankshaft using the special tool. Then remove the tool.

  23. Install the balance shaft bearing caps in their original locations. Follow the tightening sequence as shown in the illustration. Tighten bolts to 89 in-lbs (10 Nm).
  24. Tighten the camshaft phaser sprocket bolts in the correct sequence using 2 steps, as follows:
    • Step 1-30 ft-lbs (40 Nm)
    • Step 2-tighten an additional 90 degrees
  25. Position the crankshaft keyway in the 11 o'clock position.
  26. Lubricate and install all camshaft roller followers. WARNING
Engine front cover replacement procedure must be completed within 4 minutes or entire procedure must be repeated. Failure to do so may result in future leaks

Timing belt timing marks, 1997 ford escort where are they?

Ford Escort/Tracer 1991-1999 Repair Guide

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.8L Engine

(see Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt covers.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks located on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate.
  4. Remove the crankshaft pulley and hub.
  5. If the timing belt is to be reused, mark an arrow on the belt to indicate its rotational direction to enable correct re-installation.
  6. Loosen the timing belt tensioner lockbolt and remove the timing belt.
To install:
  1. Temporarily secure the timing belt tensioner in the far left position with the spring fully extended, then tighten the lockbolt.
  2. Make sure the timing marks on the timing belt pulley (crankshaft sprocket) and the engine block (oil pump housing) are aligned.
  3. Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate are aligned.
  4. Install the timing belt.
  5. Loosen the tensioner lockbolt. Using a suitable prying tool, position the timing belt tensioner so the timing belt is taut, then tighten the tensioner lockbolt.
  6. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and align the timing belt pulley mark with the mark on the engine block.

Timing belt marking

The timing marks are just above the cams at the "twelve o'clock position"

If necessary, align the timing marks.
NOTE When aligning the cam pulleys with the seal plate marks, align the left cam pulley “I” mark and the right cam pulley on the “E” mark.

WARNING When aligning the timing marks, do not turn the timing gear counterclockwise. Damage to the engine will occur.
