Sounds like the 'Purge Control Solenoid Valve' to me. The evaporative canister (charcoal canister) absorbs the vapors from the fuel tank).. sometimes this canister becomes 'saturated' and the 'PURGE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE' sucks RAW fuel into the intake manifold (causing a 'flooding' fuel condition).. but ONLY if this valve is STUCK OPEN or LEAKING. Replace this valve.. go from there.

2004 sonata will not start

Filling up the gas tank can stir up the fuel fumes. You may need to check your evap system? I can't rule out bad gas?
When the problem is ongoing, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse. With intermittent issues, need to test when problem is ongoing. How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes?
Problems at higher rpms, the basics, you check for a blockage of some kind, fuel--air--exhaust.

Does the 04 sonata really have a fuel filter?

Hi, the fuel filter is by the front of the gas tank. but the person was right about the strainer on the fuel pump but that is just the first filter to keep large sediments out, and secondary filter is to keep the small stuff out.

2004 Sonata almost stalling and check engine light is on

Cleaning the fuel line was a good idea although it will need time to take effect. Another related problem could be clogged or stuck fuel injectors. Another thing to do is pull the spark plugs. Old or dirty spark plugs also contribute to engine sluggishness. Lastly, bring the car to an autoparts store that features free diagnostic tests. If there are any error codes stored on the car's computer, it would give you an idea where to look for any electrical problems.

'04 sonata cranks for a while before starting, once warm the problem goes away. Is it the fuel pump, filter, or something else?

good question but you will have to do some testing first,, get ahold of a fuel pressuer test gaudge and test the key on fuel pressure it should be around 55lbs but each car veries so make sure to check with a repair manual to see what the exanct psi should be. once you test that then lets go from there.. put more comments up once you find out a little more and we can trouble shoot it together

My 2005 sonata starts after trying several times. It just turns over like a car out of gas, then usually on the third time it will start.

Sounds like its either fuel or ignition. Have someone turn the car over while you sniff the exhaust.
If it smells of raw unburnt gas , fuel is not the issue , your problem is most likely ingition. Car might run rough at first when it does start , due to being slightly flooded.
If no gas smell probably a fuel problem. Possible low fuel pressure , or no fuel injection.
