Your description could indicate a misfire and as you haven't complained about a poor road performance it could be injector or compression related or perhaps an intake air leak.
A code read should indicate the reason for the flashing engine light but other than that I suggest you begin with a thorough and careful tuneup.
sounds liek your crankshaft postion sensor but to be sure i would replace spark plugs and wires and change the oil if you havent recenly and check your air filter if its to dirty the car will stall
replace fuel filter, clean fuel injectors.could have bad fuel, do a code scan before buying new parts.faulty egr valve or faulty engine coolant temperature sensor cause engine run poorly.replace spark plugs and wires because if spark plug wires is bad or spark plug and ignition coil is bad that will cause rough idling misfiring and stalling you have dead cylinder not firing properly..
oh the fun of throwing parts at a car! i feel you ive been there before. have you tried testing the ignition modual? checked to make sure its getting fuel right? it could have a seized injector body. it could be a cam or crank sensor but usually those only run the ignition up to 500-900 rpms then the ECM takes over. other than that it kinda sounds like you may be loosing cylinders. you might try a compression test. i know this isnt a solution per say but ive been stuck before i know fresh ideas can help
check connection to cam sensor. sometimes corrosion will cause a poor electrical connection. clean as needed. otherwise you may have to replace the sensor.
usually when a vehicle backfires, it is caused by the timing or a bad crank sensor. symtoms of a bad coolant sensor are--poor cold idle, stalling, ( rich mixture, retarded timing) slow idle speed, cold hesitation or stumble, and poor fuel milage. check coolant sensor first. good-luck!!
Test fuel pump for proper pressure.Replace fuel filter.Check all spark plugs and spark plug wires for wear or deterioration.Have idle checked.Check all electrical connections.Check for vacuum leaks.
