It's the receiver inside the radio. It can be fixed, but isn't worth it. You can get a junk yard radio and have it programmed to your car cheaper. After market is even cheaper than that.
don't know if you have had any luck yet.. the radio displays on those older gm cars do just simply fail , I have had 4 in that 96 to 99 time frame and each one just quit suddenly. I believe as crazy as it sounds that the display runs thru the radio. gm did this in all their newer cars in 2000 and up ..they use a data cable that runs thru the radio and feeds half the dash ..
If you type in the following in the search bar 96 Pontiac Trans sport then click on search on top of the first page opened will be the link to the 96 manual then go into the section called controls and comfort settings and it will show you how to set up the A'C off your car. hope this helps you .

and if not normal, the antenna is broken or fell off the rear of radio.
if got static switch to FM ,
many AM stations, broadcase to am and fm same content.
so use FM. its static free. (by design) but does fade sooner.
you can in fact hear AM station 12,000 miles away it night
called super stations, 50,000 watt stations. ive done this many time.
did you try another car, in same spot , and same station?
are you in under ground parking?
in th trunk you can make sure the antini is attached correctly.. also be hind the radio is a big usually black with a prong on the end.. thatch the antennae wire.. make sure its all the way in to the radio
