MY TURBO SUBARU IS RINNING FINE BUT UPON STARTUPS ITS MAKING LOUD GRINDING/TAPPING/WHINING NOISE.REPLACED STARTER MOTOR AND STILL HAVE NOISE AND CAR HAVING TROUBLE GETTING STARTED

Hi there i have joined this site with the hope that some MECHANICALLY MINDED AND EXPERIENCED people can give me advise on whats wrong with my 1999 subaru forester. turbo, manual model. ok so heres whats happening. recently i have noticed in the last 3 or so months the car wont start as nice and quick as it used too. it was gradually but slowly taking abit more for the starter motor to tick the engine over. last week i noticed the car making a very odd sounding noise on startup.(ONCE CAR IS STARTED IT RUNS ABSOLUTELY FINE) as a few days went by the noise worsened on startup and the car started having abit of trouble getting started. 3 days ago the noise was horrible and wouldnt start at all after doing shopping, it was cranking over but the engine wouldnt start.....i gave it 10 minutes and tried to start it again. still ugly noise while cranking and no start. so i put it into reverse and turned and held the key so that it rolled back as the starter motor cranked, then i hit the clutch and the car started up?????? took the car home and parked it up. i removed starter motor and got another one from another turbo forester and put it in. now the car starts again but i am getting that noise again and the car isnt starting up nicely like it normally would... ive been around to a mechanic who told me to go to a auto electrician and get his opinion and for him to listen to the noise also.. they have given me the thort that it may be the RING GEAR that is stuffed??? i had the iniyial thought that i had brought a dud starter motor. they told me to come home and take starter back off and look at the ring gear....... keeping in mind that once the car is running its fine!! issue is only on startup. DOES ANY1 KNOW WHATS HAPPNING? ANY1 HAD THIS ISSUE BEFORE?? Please help

Have your timing chain/belt checked. When tensioner wears out it can male all kinds of noise. If it breaks it can get real expensive

You didn't say if you checked out the ring gear, as in flywheel this is what the starter engages when starting and after starting it disengages. There's a bendix gear on starter that once it has done it's job it bounces back into the starter motor, disengages.

Yes this can also be realated to heating problem, because if your car is having this problem after a few hours of running then when the temperature is high and you stop, this problem will really arise , so just to make sure its not a heating problem check also or have the radiator clean to amke sure no clog on it then check also the water pump..

Good luck......

SOURCE: Hard to start warm engine

Sounds like you have a problem with your fuel injectors, either they are working to much or not enough once they get warm....

Take it to a shop ant tell them you want the injectors tested.

SOURCE: transfer case is popping/jerking in low speed turns

Center differential is broken, you can test it by doing tight circles in a car park 3 or 4 to the left and repeat to the right,if it doesn't un block and it still feels like you're driving over marbles (big ones) when you turn you're sure it's the c.diff.
Check tyres are all in spec.identical and same usage, right pressure.

It could be the relay, But I don't think you have one, most starters are direct wired from the key to a solenoid on the starter, If there is a relay, it is the big fuse box under the hood, and is just a electric switch, not subject to cold. It sounds more like the terminals are filthy and the contacts are not connecting. Clean off all the wires with a wire brush and scrub the terminals with it, get underneath the connections too. Where the battery cables connect to the lead terminals, If I was up there I would be plugging in my car at night to keep it warm. It will start right up in the morning.

The car is producing a very loud continuous sound, which we can only stop by disconnecting the battery. What is causing this?

There are a few possible reasons why your car might be producing a very loud, continuous sound that can only be stopped by disconnecting the battery. Some potential causes include:
1. A faulty starter motor: If the starter motor is faulty, it can cause a loud grinding or buzzing noise when attempting to start the car.
2. A malfunctioning alternator: If the alternator is not functioning properly, it can cause a loud whining or grinding noise.
3. A stuck fan belt: If the fan belt is stuck or has become worn and is slipping, it can cause a loud squealing noise.
4. A stuck horn: If the horn is stuck, it can cause a loud, continuous honking sound.
To determine the cause of the loud noise, it is recommended to have the car checked by a professional mechanic. They will be able to diagnose the issue and suggest the appropriate repairs. In the meantime, to stop the noise, you can try disconnecting the battery as a temporary solution. However, it is important to identify and fix the root cause of the issue to avoid further damage to the car.

04 Cadillac CTS, No crank, but short grind whine noise then shut off when trying to start car. Alternator? Starter?

Hello. It seems the starter itself is wore out. The solenoid powers the motor but is not 'kicking out' the pinion gear to engage the flywheel; not like it should anyway. The 'whirring' sound is the starter; the 'grinding' sound are the starter and flywheel teeth not 'meshing' right. Remove and replace the starter. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.

1992 subaru legacy starter wont engage fully and makes a loud grinding noise

Sounds like it is not toughing 100% and making full gear contact with the fly-wheel. Replace starter or the misalignment can burr the flywheel causing rounding and subsequent damage to the device.

I replaced my starter on my 94 ford ranger. my truck won't start, when it cranks, it makes a loud grinding noise. How can I fix this problem?

When buying starter motors it is essential that the starter pinion teeth are of the same pitch as the flywheel ring gear. Not all starters from the same make fit different engines because of this problem. However I would be checking that I had put the starter in the housing properly as any misalignment will cause your problem

This is my subaru impreza gx (non turbo) it's just developed a ticking/tapping noise I've checked the oil and that was fine. The noise isn't a constant thing. It seams to get faster when accelerating

You possibly have a valve tap, do you rip on your motor a lot? If so you may have messed up the valve gauge and it could possibly be hitting the piston at a minuscule amount just enough to make a tapping noise.

95 Buick lesabre making loud grinding noise when starting. Once started runs and drives fine no noises

Yes, you are probably right about the spacer or shim. A salvage yard should have lots of them for little or nothing. When you remove the starter for the spacer, check the drive gear end of the starter for severe wear. If it is chewed off very bad, have a new drive gear put on, or replace the starter.

When i try to start the car it makes a funny sound and wont start it sounds like something is not catching

Good indication of a bad starter. Is it just clicking or is it a grinding ugly noise?. The second is definately the starter.

1995 Olds Achieva S Grinding upon starting

They make that kind of noise if its low on fluid, and also depending on how cold it is they will make a lot of noise because the colder it is the thicker the oil is and the harder it is to pump. I am not there to hear the starter, If the starter is making noise it will only be audiable while your on start, i dought starter will make that noise while its running unless the drive is sticking . Have both the pump and starter chk.out.

Loud engine whine (like a jet noise) from 2002 subaru forester

Have you crawled under the vehicle and personally inspected your exhaust line from manifold to tail pipe? The roaring sound usually occur when there is a hole in the exhaust line. I had it happen to my forester before. A hole half the size of a dime made my subaru sound like my old 74 chevy pickup.
